my son is a cadet!

Post by O.S.O.K. »

My yougest just heard from the Airforce Acsademy and has accepted enrollment :). He flies to Colorado Springs next month for basic training prior to starting his first year.

He was rejected on the initial selection and placed on a waiting list. Very disheartening for him but he handled it like a man.

His mother and I are so very proud of how he handled that and for all of his accoplishments. :)

Sorry for the proud parent bragging but I just had to tell somebody.

You have every right to Brag and BRAG LOUD.

Good for him.

If it's worth anything, the only advice I give to someone going into the Military whether it be an Academy, ROTC, or Boot Camp is; "Do what they tell you to do when they tell you to do it" and everything will turn out to the good.

That's one heck of an accomplishment.

More than I can say with words, allhands :)

Ysabel, yes he earned his Eagle rank and will be giving a speach in front of his 400 class mates along with their families next friday at his graduation as the class valedictorian - very dedicated young man.

We did try hard as parents but sometimes God just puts them together in such a way that they are very well suited for their "time". We are blessed with three great kids and are thankful for them all :)

Congratulations.

Having dealt with a large number of USAFA cadets though....... keep an eye on his attitude.

Around his second year, he may need a smack in the head. Quite a few 3rd/4th year guys, not all wannabe pilot types, get a real superiority complex.

We generally had to fix that little issue when they visited my squadron.

Mr. Murphy, he is a very quiet and unassuming young man. Not one cocky bone in his body. If he had the predilection for that, it would have shown up a long time ago. I don't think this will go to his head.

Hey Murph, It's not just Air Force cadets (or newly minted officers too), pretty much all young men and women seems to go thru a bit of that. The military does a darned good job of instilling "esprit de corps" in the troops. So, the big head and puffed out chest just come with the package. The good ones eventually learn the reality of life. The bad ones usually fail at life.

But from my experience, way back when, the academy grads have usually gotten past that by the time they hit the squadron. Though, they do seem to have a feeling of superiorty over then OCS folks.

Congratulations, you have raised one of America's best.

My youngest graduated from USAFA in '09 with a degree in civil engineering. It was quite an experience, he traveled to Alaska and Qatar while he was a cadet. Also made trips to the Naval Academy, West Point, Notre Dame, BYU, TCU, and several other schools. Make sure your son looks into the outfitters club at the Academy. My son was able to do quite a bit of hunting and fishing up there, including taking a cow elk.

Cody is flying C-130's now at Dyess AFB in Abilene.

If your son wants to talk to a graduate about what to expect, or anything else about the Academy ... I can put him in touch with a 1Lt who should be able to answer his questions.
