How old were you when you first paid into SS?

Post by Old Time Hunter »

After reading Chuck 100yd's impending retirement and the statement "afterworking 46years" got me to thinking.

How long has everyone paid into Social Security?

According to the last statement from SS, I was first recorded as paying in when I was 12 years old.

When did you start?

The jobs I had in high school were all "off the books". I wonder if kids can even do some of the jobs I did. Probably too many laws against it today. So, I didn't start paying until I went into the service at eighteen.

I worked in a pharmacy for 50¢ an hour when I was 16, but come payday the only deduction I had was for Social Security. I worked until I was 63 so I paid in for 47 years. Good thing all those years weren't spent in the pharmacy because the pay sure sucked.

My first real-world job with decuctions was at a ESSO gas station when I was 12-years orld in 1955. I fully retired in 1996 so I paid SS for 41-years.

MediCare is the real question. It wasn't around during my first working years and then when it was voted in, the Military was exempt. I didn't start paying into MediCare until I retired from the Navy in 1989 and started working a civilian (ship yard) job two weeks later. So using the year 1996 for full retirement, I only paid into MediCare for 7-years.

I am now 69-years old and have been drawing SS since age 62 (7-years) and MediCare since age 65 (4-years).

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

I had just turned 18 in 1960 and got a job for the United States Department of Agriculture Pink Bollworm Research Center. First place I ever got a paycheck. Before that all of my work as cash in hand. I liked that better but Uncle Sam didn't think much of the practice.

Back when I started working at the local grocery store at 13 for 50 cents per hour, you couldn't work but a few hours a day and not after dark and only with parental permission. They withheld federal, state, and SS from my pay.

1964, I was 12 yrs old and I worked every farm job I could find. About the only legitimate jobs available for a kid in those days. Just got my statement and I've been paying in for 48 years, most of them at double rate because I had my own business. Not to mention what I paid in on behalf of my employees over the years. I just hope that there will be something left for me in four to five years!

15. The ad said 16 but I was already wearing size 11 shoes so nobody questioned me about it. Well, actually the manager did after about 2 weeks, he thought I must have been at least 18. I'm 65 now, I'll start drawing a check this fall at 66 but I haven't retired yet.

1977 when I was 17 delivering doughnuts starting at 4 a.m. before my class at high school my junior year. Before that I was self-employed catching tropical fish and selling them to pet shops since I was 9 years old but didn't pay taxes.

I was 12 when I first paid in. On the same S.S. info sheet they no longer send out through the mail it totals a persons wages for each year. Total up your lifetime wages. It is amazing how long it takes to show a decent figure on a working mans wage.

At 15 - a job as a summer camp counselor, in the Catskills. The owner was a cheap flinty sonofagun who paid us beans, but the perks were pretty good, including hanging out at the pool as lifeguards and chatting up the girl counselors.

I got my SS card specifically for that job.

I first started paying in at age 16 with my first town job - a grill cook at a Tastee Freez. Farm jobs before that were paid in cash when the job was finished. I made a lot more from baling hay in one summer than I did in two full years as a cook but the latter was in an air conditioned building.
Well done is better than well said.

My first job where SS was paid was at age 17 in 1968, working as a pump jockey at a Shell gas station. If I remember correctly gas was 26 cents a gallon and we gave out S & H Green Stamps to help draw customers!

Yep. One of too many, and designed so we think we're "getting something" back that remotely compensates for what was put in, and the harm done to the economy and our economic stability... :(

There won't be. The government has deflated the value of 'money' so much that you'll be getting back little of value vs. what was taken from you over the years.

The reason I got a real job at 12. My Grandparents farmed me out to pick cherries in Door County when I was 10 and 11. $.25 a bucket, they let me keep the money on every fourth one. Usually made $2 a day, but after a couple of days my fingers would become permanently stained, had to wear the color off. Made $30 that first year, thought I was a millionaire. Bought a $20 US Savings bond for $11...became a big investor.

Made $65 the second year, bought a $30 bike so I could peddle to a real job.
