Weird Me, Weird Guns
Made an impulse purchase last night.
Saw an older guy selling off some guns/ammo from a roadside stand on the WY/NE border.
A few levers - none under $500 - and some other stuff.
But what caught my warped attention was the 28" bolt action, magazine fed 16ga for $165.
It's a Western Auto (parts store) House Brand, "Revelation" 316B Full Choke, 2-3/4".
Shiny bore, no visible SN (haven't dissembled it yet.)
Standard Bead front, fixed "U" rear.
The 2 rd magazine is a simple affair, except for a welded "rail" at the rear. Probably impossible to find another.
Still, I'm into old 16ga guns, so I had to have it - especially with no Paper.
Ignore the Fat Cat...
More info as research is done...

Re: Weird Me, Weird Guns
OI you might be surprised and find an extra mag for it. they are around. A few years ago Mossberg or Savage one, I can't remember which was trying to bring back the concept of the bolt action as an inexpensive security shotgun w/ a 5 round mag. I saw a lot of them when I was younger. They're about as bullet proof as anything I know.

Savage 502 (.22LR) or Striker (centerfire) meets the bolt handgun need and they are usually cheaper than an XP100, etc.Old Ironsights wrote: Need a Bolt Handgun and a semi-auto Muzzleloader next...
Can't help on the semi-auto muzzle loader but you CAN get a semi-auto single shot. The Winchester Model 55 self ejecting single shot:

Re: Weird Me, Weird Guns
There is something oddly appealing in them. The lack of any type of locking lug is a bit concerning. But they work. I inherited a 410 version from my Dad's collection and would like to shoot it more.

Re: Weird Me, Weird Guns
Last gun I ever purchased was a and old H&R bolt action 349 Gamester shotgun with a Poly-choke in very nice shape for $99 at our local gunshow for my nephew about 4 years ago. It was cool in it's unusualness, and he was ecstatic. I'd like to find a cheap old .410 boltgun.

FWIW, he has a late 40s W94 that's in (IMO) "average" condition. Didn't look at it much, it's a little warty o the surface but it seemed solid. IIRC he wanted a bit over $700 fr it. Had a couple of newer ones as well, including one with a matte nickle(?) frame, for less than $600 (IIRC) but I dunno what it really is/worth.
I can call him and (probably) get pictures if people are interested.

First shotgun I ever fired and hunted with was a 20 ga. just like yours. I had borrowed it from my uncle until I saved up enough money from working for him baling hay and bought my own H&R Topper 20 ga.

Yeah it does Mescalero. I guess it's sufficient with the lower pressure shotgun rounds, but it gives you the hee bee jee bees when you look at it. Have not heard of one failing though so maybe my own hangup.Mescalero wrote:Chris,

Re: Weird Me, Weird Guns
For the 410 Gauge or lighter loads, it doesn't give me a worry. But for the heavies, that strip of steel that holds the bolt forward.....it makes you wonder. I don't have a good understanding of how much backward stress is created by shotgun shells. Based on the bright spot created in my shotguns where the blue used to be, where the back of the shell meets the reciever , there is a good bit of bolt thrust generated in Shotguns? But I just haven't heard of any problems so I don't know if it's a real issue. With one working eyeball, I like stuff to be a bit over engineered.Mescalero wrote:Does'nt inspire confidence?

Re: Weird Me, Weird Guns
Over all I'm not to stressed about it. I'm never going to shoot anything but SAAMI (and -) loads and those will almost not blowup a damascus...
With the bolt locked into the stock/receiver I'm not too worried.
The metal does not look fatigued/abused and the bore/chamber is bright. All the exterior wear is honest.
I'm just hoping that I can run bismuth through it to hunt pheasant on Holy (EPA Regulated) Ground where Lead is verboten (sig heil!)

Western Autos are usually Mossberg/Marlin.
Friend has a W.A .30-30, it's a rebranded 336 with an added side-of-receiver thumb safety (not a pushbutton, almost like a 1911's but different direction).
That looks like a smaller version of Mossberg's 10ga goose cannon. Teacher of mine had one.

I've had good luck with Western Auto Supply stuff. The ones I've had were store-brand Marlins. Should be fun.

Re: Weird Me, Weird Guns
That sounds like it might be a Mossberg 472 instead of a Marlin 336. Mossberg leveraction rifles were sold through Western Auto, they had a "lever" type safety on the left side of the receiver. Check your friend's rifle to see if the trigger moves with the lever (like a BL22) when you operate the action. If it does it is probably a Mossberg. By the way, those older Mossbergs were pretty decent rifles (in 30-30 and 35 Rem), I don't know why they weren't very popular.MrMurphy wrote:Western Autos are usually Mossberg/Marlin.

Re: Weird Me, Weird Guns
Nothing weird about bolt action shotguns.....My father has a bolt shotgun exactly like the one in the OP's post, except it has rifle sights on it. He bought it new from Mongomery Wards 45 or 50 years ago. It has the 2 shot clip and with foster type slugs he has killed several deer with it.
A couple of months ago, a guy at work was talking about this bolt action 20 ga Savage he had and wanted to sell. When I learned it had a 3" chamber, I bought it to jump shoot ducks with as I had a bunch of 20 ga. bismuth to use up. It has worked out to be a tremendously pleasant gun to shoot. I bet I've killed 25 ducks with it so far.
Both of those guns have only the bolt handle as a locking lug. One of the posts made mention of that arraingment being OK for 410's but they wouldn't want to trust it to the big boomers. Just an FYI, 410's chamber pressure is far higher than that of a 12 or 20 ga. If the single lug is good enough for a 410, its good enough for a 12 ga.
Enjoy that new (to you) 16 ga bolt gun. Seeing it brought back pleasant memories....
