Sometimes you just have to buy them cause they're cool

Post by jdad »

Every once in a while I find something that doesn't have a lever that really says, "buy me." The price didn't hurt either.;)

Blaine, I know you have a soft spot for these. :D This 72 was just too nice, not to take off the rack.

This was also really cool and priced the same as the 72. :D This has the last style barrel roll stamp used. It begins with "Made in USA" instead of "Manufactured by the Winchester......". Very rare chambered in 22LR only.

You have the "spiffy" one with the peep sight. I've never shot my 72 on paper. It's also never missed a squill, or anything important.... I don't want to jinx it by sighting it in  I heard a couple times that they have an adjustable trigger, but, I've never taken it out of the stock to see....

Yes, there is a tension screw that can change the pull about 1 pound.

I love MY 72 (which was my dad's and like yours has the peep sight) and my Winchester pump guns. All very cool and loaded with memories as much as with .22 LR...

I had a Model 72 once. Nothing but problems. Would mis-feed on a regular basis. If it was adjusted to feed long rifles reliably, it wouldn't feed shorts worth a darn and visa-versa. Finally got rid of it.

On the other hand, I have a Model 61 with a grooved receiver in excellant shape that is my favorite .22. If God owns a .22, it is probably a Model 61 Winchester. Paid through the nose for it but it was worth it.

How does one "adjust" a Model 72 between shorts, and long rifles? :? :?

You did good, especially if you can find ammo! That second one reminds me of the Win. M1890 .22 Short only, that my gramps gave me. Barrel was shot out causing the bullets to tumble tho. Was laid off, and really hard-up around 1971, and sold it for $40. The cheapest 1890 I have seen in years was $599. Maybe some day.
