Dust free shop?

Post by olyinaz »

Thought I'd pass along something that's been working well for me.

Do you have an enclosed shop that gets dusty to the point that it annoys you? In Arizona it's always a problem, but it can be a problem in houses with carpet anywhere so I thought I'd pass something along. What's worked well for me is one of the small HEPA air filter units that they sell at Walmart and Target etc. I first tried this in my observatory because I wanted to keep dust off of my optics and it's worked well for years. Most recently I completed a 120 sq/ft free standing shed into a gun/reloading shop, and I've put one in there and that's working well also. Here's what I'm talking about (or something similar): http://www.walmart.com/ip/True-HEPA-All ... es/9189152

What I do is set it to run on high when I leave my shop, and when I step back in I put it on low so that it's not too noisy. In the meantime it's constantly filtering the air and I can say that I've had really good luck with these buggers keeping my shops nice and dust free. Obviously you have to change the filters from time to time, but they're not terribly expensive. One other benefit I get is that since it is filtering the air in my shed, the filter in the air conditioner that I have in there stays clean and I don't have to use a HEPA filter in it which lowers the efficiency.

Lastly, I have not seen that these units raise the level of static electricity in the air where I use them, but I learned long ago while working with sensitive electronics to always ground myself and dump whatever charge I may have before proceeding to work, and I use that same discipline in the reloading shop (not sure if I have to, but I do).

So if you want a dust free work area and it's something that is or can be closed off, give one of these a try! The larger the room, the larger the unit you should get. YMMV!
Cheers,
Oly

Thanks, that's a good idea. I have problems with dust at work and have been coughing a lot, even at home. It could be that whatever dust I have in my carpet is exacerbating the condition; this might be worth a try.

I've got a coal furnace in my shop. It would kill that thing in about 10 minutes

Wait a minute, an observatory? How does that work?

Around here people get as far as they can out in the boonies away from all the light pollution they can.

If so, can you imagine what it's doing to your lungs?

My lovely bride and I recently bought one for our carpeted bedroom. Made a big difference on the dusting job so we also bought one for our living room. Like um!

It's all boonies in Tucson.

I'm not an accomplished photographer, but even I can manage an image or two from our reasonably dark and clear skies.

That's really cool Oly :!:

I've heard of astronomy clubs around here. They usually congregate at some place in the boonies they'll refer to as their "dark place." Once there and set up they usually have strict light discipline rules.

Ahh, looks like yesterday up along the 14. I don't miss those, I replaced a couple of windshields.

Where OLY lives they have there fair share of dust storms. In the early 80's I got caught in one on N Oracle rd, it ruined the windshield and took the left front fender down to shiny metal in about 20 minutes.
