six shooter?

Post by mikld »

Day after the festivities, watching old reruns, and Wayatt Earp (Hugh O'Brien) got in a gunfight and unloaded 9 or 10 rounds from his single action (looks like a Colt) revolver. (I lost count after 7!)

I have a old friend that told me he shot against hugh obrian many years ago at big bear. That would have been back probley in the 1950s when jeff cooper, jack weaver and those guys used to shoot up there. If so, obrian would know better and should have protested to the movie director. I understand he was pretty good but my friend claims he beat him.

It's fantasy, forget about it. Heck in the opening scene of The Rifleman, McCain fires one more round that the gun holds. They did it so the rounds would end at the right place in the theme song. Just enjoy the show.

As a kid I never counted... And when I went with friends, our "finger guns" NEVER failed to go bang! Sometimes, even after our buds would yell... "I already kilt ya... you can't shoot anymore!" :D :D :D

We had a farm from 1913 with old buildings no longer in use - no better place for complicated gunfights. Good as any movie set.

Hey, it's not just in the movies and on TV, but "real" life too. I know first hand - as a kid being Sgt Saunders, I can personally vouche my Thompson's mag held at least 250, and a buddy's Garand at least 100 before he loudly pronounced "ca-ching" :) :)

Yeah, I know it's fantasy. But it's still fun. I don't know when or why it started, but I count shots and seeing Wyatt pop off 10 in one scene is still fun. Did I say it's still fun? I'm not watching documentaries, just reruns from the 60s.

Now Matt Dillon is a different story altogether. Matt does one shot kills from the hip and burys at least one bad guy per episode. "C'mon Chester, we got some buryin' to do". Matt only uses six shot six guns, 'cause he's such a good shot he don't need more! I even saw him cleaning his gun and he had the cylinder out! Wyatt never had to clean his guns. Yeah, you can tell Matt is true to life...

They just edit out the boring parts where they are reloading, more bang for the movie buck.

Aren't they supposed to be carrying only five?

I know this isn't guns but my boys tell me the length of the runway in the latest fast an furious film needs to be about 25 miles long for the time chasing and shooting. Apparently the longest runway in the world is about 5 miles long in china!

While it's likely most carried 5, I'm pretty sure that they loaded 6 if shooting was in the offing.

Too change a famous line:

Clint Eastwood: "I know what your thinking did I shoot 5 or six?"

Could be

"I know what your thinking did I shoot 8 or 12"

I am sure he shot off a lot more than 5 or 6
