Always wanted a 92 Win in 44WCF

Post by Marvin S »

But you all know what they want for them so I picked this Rem 14 1/2 up awhile back. 8gr unique and the LEE 200gr RNFP and it's quite the little shooter. It makes me look past the poor slathering of cold blue and wood refinish.

What a great find  I personally have never seen one in that caliber. Do you have a matching sidearm for it. 3leg
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Considering the cold blue job and stock refinish it was a third the price of a 92 with a good bore. I don't have a revolver to go with it. The 14 1/2 is a strong action so there is that to consider when selecting a matching handgun.

Uberti / cimmaron makes or made a 44 mag with a 44-40 cyl. with it

Very nice! And you have the nifty peep sight to go with it. Perfect!

And if you get tired of that beat-up old thing I can trade you a nice Rossi for it. :D

This was the second one in 44 that was offered to me, the first one had the barrel hacked on. These use to be popular prison guard rifles.

I'm curious as to how you know this about the pump action, Marvin? It's possible that you and I and some long-retired Remington people are the only ones who think this about the relative strength of the 14 1/2 action.

It is listed for high pressure tier 2 loads in some reloading manuals such as Lyman 4th edition cast bullet manual. Besides is it not really just a model 14 action, same as used in 25,30,and 35 Rem calibers. But called a 14 1/2 to differentiate it as a pistol caliber rifle.

Actually, the 44WCF IS a rifle cartridge. Introduced in 1873 with the 1873 Winchester. the Hi-Vel loads were only listed for rifles of the 1892 strength. Awaiting a range report!

Wow!! That is a GREAT find! I'm eagerly awaiting a range report also.

So is the bore excellent on that one? Any chance you'll consider having it restored or at least the receiver properly blued?

I would LOVE to find one of those at a great price, but in my town the chances are ZERO I suspect. :(
Cheers,
Oly

You have a very nice Find, Sir. Not many 14 1/2 Carbine's were made.

Remington brought them out to compete with the Winchester 92.

Some 14 1/2 's had Saddle rings, very rare.

Also some were chambered in 38 WCF, (38-40).

Congratulations,

I has a very good bore and shoots very well, the first time I had it out. Restored would be nice but no doubt would cost too much. At least it was not sanded or buffed when the cold blue was done. I'll get up some targets and range report next time it goes out.
