Now you got your 3 powders, what's

Post by 3leggedturtle »

The main cartridges you are going to use them in? What caliber pistols and rifles will get reloaded and shot using those powders?

Mine would be:

30/30
223
357
9mm
45C
45ACP
45/70
250 Savage

30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

I missed answering the other thread, so here's my three most used powders. But wait, I can't do three, I have to do five.

Handguns: 231, Unique, 2400.
Rifles: Win 748 and 760.

That's about it. Off and on there are other powders I've used, but these are my go to powders.

Joe reworded my questions. Would you believe I have never used or bought any Winchester powders!

3leggedturtle,

Sorry about that. I got hooked on Winchester powders decades ago. I was shooting a lot of center fire rifle and my powder measure would not through consistent charges of extruded powders.
So I tried Win 748. Oh happy days. Beautiful loads. Then I tried Win 231 and fell in love with it.

Been using them since.

Those of you who are members of AmmoGuide know that this is fun to work through on their website; you can enter a powder and see what different cartridges have significant numbers of loads available using that powder. OR you can select several different cartridges, and AmmoGuide will list the powders which are common to all of them.

Two very interesting tools for a reasonable price, IMO... 8)

45 Colt, 45 Auto Rim, 41 Mag, 38 Special, 30WCF, 32 WCF, 32 Special, 38-55, 45-70, 50-70, 375 Ruger, and 30-40 Krag.
I have good loads with cast bullets for all of these with my three stated powders (Unique, black ,Reloader 7). It should be noted that my 41 mag loads are like the old service load.

I realize in todays economic and reloading component situation alotta folks try and get by with whatever and simplify etc !

I on the other hand do not and have no intention of going that route !

I think I have something like 40-50 different powders on the shelf in my loading room and God willing I'll keep it that way for a good long while !

Christ in some instances I have 5 or 6 different powders to use in the same application .

Matter of fact I got my first pound of Western powder "X-Terminator" to be exact !

X-Terminator will do the same thing with big cast bullets in the 444 that I already do with H322 , IMR8208 , RL-7 , XMR2015 , VV N-120 , VV N-130 , VV N-530 and W748 !

It should also perform in the 204 Ruger and 222 REM like H322 and VV N-120 and Rl-7 have !

Kudo's to those who can and want to "get by" , I rather prefer a LARGE selection
Parkers , Mannlicher Schoenauer’s , 6.5mm's and my family in the Philippines !

Here are my loading interests:
223 Remington
270 Winchester
30-06 Springfield
30-06 M1 Garand (more limited in scope for safety)
30-30 Winchester
32 Browning/32ACP
357 Magnum
38 Special
38 Special +P
380 ACP
40 S&W
44 Magnum
44 Special
45 ACP
45 ACP BHawk Only
45 Colt
45 Colt BHawk Only
45-70 1895 Marlin
45-70 Govt Trapdoor pressures
7.62x39 Russian
8x57 (8mm Mauser)
9mm Luger

17 calibers, if you disregard the different power levels; but requirements change.
I am trying 19 powders, but already am zeroing in on some favorites that seem to work well on a variety of calibers.

I went from loading for 15 different cartridges to 3. 38/357 for both rifle and pistol, 30-30 and 223. A lot less loading time. Unique and cast bullets for 357 and most of the 30-30, jacketed bullets for the 30-30 and 223 use 748.

My short list:

- .32 H&R, currently using TiteGroup and BlueDot
- .357M, currently using Unique and BlueDot
- .243, currently using IMR4064

For my 3 powder choice I combined the TiteGroup and Unique and switched em to RedDot.

Well, it's not just the caliber, but the application as well. You could have only one gun and load for it 3 or 4 ways.

here's mine:

.357 reduced, soft lead 180's and 4227 or 4759 (short range silhouette) - Excellent

.357 medium, copper coated 158's, works for handgun, 4227 - Good

.357 just under max, Barnes XPB 140, for hunting - Very Good

.357 max load, 180 Lasercast (long range silhouette), 4227 - Very Good

35 Rem, just under max, with 200 grain Hornady or Sierra, H4895 - Excellent

30-30, reduced load with copper coated bullets, 4227 - Good

30-30, reduced load with copper coated bullets, H4895 - Acceptable

30-30, hunting load with Barnes or jacketed bullets, H4895 - Good

The least accurate for me are the 30-30 loads. So I might be in the market for the right 30-30 powder. But like I said before, I'm hesitant to try something and have a lot left over. Although OS has generously offered his help there.

I don't need a fast pistol powder because I don't shoot the lighter bullets, and also I don't need the slow rifle powder because my cartridges are the medium capacity ones.

38 Special/357 mag
44mag
45 Colt
45ACP
30/30
308 Win
45/70
450 Alaskan
348 Win
350 Rem Mag

If I can't get it done with them then I doubt I would really need to handload for anything else

Other's that I probably wouldn't mess with unless I run out of ammo, and factory ammo is usually good enough for these, so I just try to keep plenty on hand.

You'd sort of think that the basic needs would be met with a 'slow', 'medium', and 'fast' powder, and that the cartridges group into 'shotshell', 'straight/pistol', and 'bottleneck/rifle'. Should be some 'natural pairing' there.

Like others have pointed out, though, there is a big factor in the 'hotness' of a load for a given cartridge, or even in typical pressures used/expected. A 454 Casull isn't all that much like a 45 ACP, even though they are both the same caliber bullet, and both 'straight/pistol' cases...
