Round based bullets?

Post by Nath »

So...we have heeled, boat tailed and flat based bullets but has anyone actually ever made a round based bullet? Hemisperical.
I think it would be good!

I have some R-P 9mm 147gr HP's that I got from Midway that have a round base like that. They shoot great out of my Puma 357 at 1400fps. Shot out of a 35/444 at over 2000fps they vaporized a milk jug, they held together and didn't blow up.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

I don't recall "round" based bullets but I have seen what was referred to as bevel base bullets. These used to be popular with a few folks I knew back in the early 70's that used Star reloaders because of the ease of seating the bullet in the case. We had a gunsmith in our town that was happy to tell you how he had a custom mold made so he turn out thousands of .38's with fewer bad rounds because of it.

Not a round based bullet per say, but I have some round nosed conical bullets for my 1858 Remington clone that shoot better if you shoot them with the flat bottom forward. They load easier that way too.

Rusty and Nath : If you wanna see a pic of this bullet. It's on the Midway bulk handgun bullet section. As the Remington bullets 9mm (355 Diameter) 147 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point. Weird looking bullet but it works great.

That's how the first .50 Alaskans were loaded, using the back half of a .50 BMG bullet.

Yes Franklin Mann tried round based bullets in about 1890 looking for a perfect bullet base that wouldn't tip from gas pressure.

Didn't work.
