Old West Burial ?

Post by cshold »

Was it a common practice in the old west to bury the dead with there guns?
Talk about a tight custom casket fit

No way I would put a valuable object like a gun in a casket.

Thats a pretty unlikely scenario considering most people were darn near broke. Likely sold to pay funeral costs or stolen rather rapidly

No different than laying a rifle or two across the legs of dead badguys in a photo.

Doesn't mean they'll bury him with it.

Either a Model 1888 or a 1889. I'm leaning towards a 1888.

Griff,
It does not have the receiver shape of an 81. Besides, an 81's loading gate is a sliding cover with no indentataion. I saved the picture and blew it up and it got very grainy. I was looking for the bolt....could not see it. I did not put a lot of time on the examination as I have other s&&. to do. :D ---6

Couldn't see the bolt either and the lever shape says 1888 or 1889. Action is too short for an 1881 as well.

Marlin 1888, the story of Rube Burrows tells of how that rifle led to his death.

I couldn't see the bolt either, but was unaware of the difference in loading gates. Found a pic of an '81, now see it. With only 4,800 '88s made, it's pretty rare. Wonder if someone has that one in their collection?!

Less lumber wasted as well. Trees large enough for decent sized planks could be scarce in many areas, and then you still needed a saw mill.

I understand James Butler Hickock's friend Charlie Utter arranged for the funeral & saw to it that a Sharp's rifle that Hickock was fond of was placed along side him in his coffin.... rarity, I guess. Apparently he'd quit using his '51 Navy Colt nickel-plated; ivory handled revolvers at some point.....one of them is in the Gene Autry museum, I think. He was carrying a S&W No.2 Army revolver when he was murdered. jd45
