Titanium Carbo-Nitrate Treated Parts

Post by Griff »

I'm thinking about getting some of my Dillon 550B parts TiCN treated to improve their sliding capabilities. The parts are:
a - the primer carrier & primer track bearing and,
b - the powder charge bars.

The primer carrier and the bearing plate on my old machine seem to be the worst with a little wear after many thousands of rounds.

I am sure Dillon would replace them for free. I am sure you are like me and would rather pay for them since the parts are worn but gave good service all of their life. Dillon did not wear them out.

WELL... the answer is: DON'T DO IT!

I left home Sunday, telling the boy to wait, I'd just order a new primer carrier & bearing plate from Dillon. Which I did on Monday. WARRANtY!!!

But... since this was HIS idea, he figured he'd do it anyway. So, he disassebled all 6 powder bars (3 measures) and all 4 primer carriers, packaged 'em up and shipped 'em down to an outfit in Houston. To be done & returned by the time I got home Monday evening.

He called me today to let me know I wouldn't be able to load Tues or Wed. The parts are just heaps of slag! Apparently high tin content alloys won't withstand the 800ºF used in the process.

Oh, BTW, apparently this didn't exceed the limits of Dillon's "No BS Warranty! New parts will be shipped Monday.

Wow Griff

That is some story. And talk about above and beyond service from Dillon. I know now where I will go for my next loading press purchase.

TiCN and similar coatings are for hardened STEEL parts...

I'm a bit saddened and disturbed that the coating facility didn't seem to be aware of that fact, and blindly went ahead, destroying your parts in their ignorance...

What about Robar's NP3 coating? My Puma has this stuff for all its internal parts and its awesome. I don't think it uses high heat to bond it to the metal. Buck, do you know? -Tutt

My only experience with NP3 is as an end user, and then, only second-hand.. I'm not certain of the process, even though it's been out there for years..

What I just read about NP3 is that it involves heat treating @300ºC for 4 hours. If so, I don't wanna go there!

What I AM going to do is what this guy did, extended primer bearing plate

That's 575 F so I agree with you there. Problem is the Dillon has always had these issues and the factory seem to want to address them through their "no BS warranty" and not by improving the product. Bummer. -Tutt
