New guy here - questions

Post by Gary Gill »

Hello. I have been searching and reading here for awhile. Great place to learn. I am a long time shooter / reloader trying to learn what my options are for a lever action in 357 cal. Is there a stainless model other than the Puma / Rossi? Blued is okay too. I plan to use a vernier tang sight rather than a telescope.

Thanks for the help,
Gary

Welcome to the fire.
I had a S/S Rossi .357 it was a great little carbine but due to stupid British law I could only legally use it at the range. It was well made and never let me down.

Gary - welcome aboard. I am sure you will continue to find this place a great place to hang out. Do not over-look the Marlin 1894 lever in 357. I do not beleive it comes in stainless steel. If I was buying - I would go with the Winchester 1892 action and the Rossi/Puma. I own a Puma in 45 Colt and have been pleased with it.

Welcome aboard! A couple of the members here have posted pictures of their .357 SS levers. I think Old Ironsights just did yesterday or the day before - a Rossi 92 with a satin or matte SS finish - a real sweet set-up. Several members also hunt a lot with their .357 levers - with great results!

Post some pictures when you get it! :D

The Marlin 1894 was made in SS in a special limited run for Davidson's a couple of years back. They are pretty scarce now and were not inexpensive when they first came out. I have one in blued steel Marlin in 357 and it has been a favorite for quite a while. I also have a stainless Rossi in 454 that I love and I have no doubt it would be a good choice in 357 too.

You will find that the .357 is a favorite here-parts. Maybe not quite as much as the .30-30, but pretty durn close.

I've also hunted with it - both small game and Deer. With a proper bullet & good aim it will take a deer down right now out to 100yds +/-.

I don't know of anyone that's making a stainless leveraction in 357m except Rossi. Most folks know them as the Puma but that's just the model designation for the Rossi's imported by Legacy Sports. I prefer the Rossi imported by EMF as their Hartford model. Mainly because it comes with better semi-buckhorn and brass bead sights and EMF's wood tends to be better.

Here's a typical example.

Oops, where's my manners. HOWDY! welcome to the fire. If you are a leverlover and a bit conservative you'll fit right in. If you are a leverlover and otherwise but thick skinned you will still fit right in.

Howdy, welcome to The Forum. Personally, I don't think there's an option. I have two Rossi carbines in .357 and a "Short Rifle" in .45 Colt. Sweer shooters all!

P.S.: Marlin makes a good gun also.

P.S.S.: MAYBE Whinchester will re-introduce the 94 in 2009, and MAYBE it could be had in .357; but... then you'll have missed a year of having fun. And, that ain't an option!

Welcome aboard GG.

I've got a blue Marlin .357 but have seriously thought of having an "ARMORIZE" treatment done on it. Just need to save my dimes. It's a microscopic "orange peel" effect which greatly reduces the chrome flash.

The main difference is the rosi 92 is a stronger action than the marlin. Even stronger than the 336 marlin. You won't see a marlin in 454 casull. The Rossi 454's have been out a while now. Other than splitting stocks and jerking the mag tube out of them the lockbox is holding up pretty ggod.
