Defect Discount On Rossi 44 Magnum Leveraction
I have been looking for an inexpensive (?) 44 magnum lever action rifle for a while. Saw one at the local Retailer yesterday brand new for about $550.00. That is more than I wanted to pay for a new Rossi. However, when looking closely at the rifle, I noticed a 1 1/2 inch crack at the bottom front of the forearm. I mentioned the flaw/defect to the manager of the gun counter, and he said he would see if the company would discount the price on the Rossi because of that obvious crack. What should a new Rossi 44 magnum carbine be worth with that defect? What would you guys pay for it, knowing that the forearm will likely have to be replaced? Seriously, I might buy it if they knock off enough $.

There are beacoupe Rossi levers available on the used market. I see them in the $375-$425 range. Have you considered the Marlin 1894? Good luck in your search. 1886.

$550 is about right for new retail asking price around here, but used ones, when found, rarely go for more than 400. I paid $449 for my brand-new 24" "Hartford"-branded Rossi .45 Colt a year ago, mainly because the guy had had it in his shop for over a year. Wonderful rifle.

.
"Used" is not the same as new, even a new rifle with a cracked FE (an easy fix).
I would expect them to knock off $100, for that "demo"/"floor model" that cracked isself up.

Sounds about right....You can fix that crack real easy. Stick a toothpick in to spread the crack just a hair, and put some superglue down there.....wrap tight for a few hours....Pete44ru wrote:.

Re: Defect Discount On Rossi 44 Magnum Leveraction
Taurus/Rossi prices went up in December. On average about $60. Current wholesale for a blue round barrel carbine is about $460, Davidson's about $490. Factor in $15 to $30 S&H to get it to the gun shop that $550 gun is carrying about a 10% markup.
If you offer them less than what they have in it the shop may just decide to send it back for a replacement. If you pass on it and go looking of a used 44mag, be aware that in the mid 2000's the 44mag guns had over-size bores.
If that crack is not missing any wood you can repair it with super glue and it will virtually disappear.

To be honest, from what I've seen of Rossi's QC on stocks, I wouldn't get my hopes up on much of a discount.... not saying it's right, just it is what it is.
Retail of $500+ is about what I see down here too. Secondhand market locally is pretty variable, a lot of guys don't want to sell unless they get top dollar, and actually get mad that people won't pay them 90% of retail. Then there's a few now and then that actually need to sell and price their guns accordingly. Those go fast.

OK, thanks Guys for the input. I'll let you know what they say about discounting it. Too bad that the prices went up in December. They probably bought it before then, but any discount will probably be about to their pre-December price.

Dead on. Been looking for a used SRC, but in .357, for what the Seller is asking, might just as well by new.92&94 wrote:To be honest, from what I've seen of Rossi's QC on stocks, I wouldn't get my hopes up on much of a discount.... not saying it's right, just it is what it is.
