Win.94 top tang question and receiver question, Factory D&T?
What was the last year that Winchester D&T the top tang for a tang sight? What year did Winchester begin drilling the 94 for a receiver sight. Thank you. 1886

I don't know the exact dates, but they dropped the tang sight hole in the 30's I believe, and added the side receiver sight holes in the early-mid 50's. Someone should be along that has exact dates.
The factory would also drill and tap to mount a specific sight a customer ordered. Because it wasn't standard doesn't mean it wasn't factory original.

The M94 tang sight prep ceased just after WWII; the M94 receiver sidewall peep sight prep was introduced in 1951 (around SN 1350000), and discontinued with the introduction of the M94AE in 1982.

Madis states in "The Winchester Book" that 94 receivers "are provided with one threaded hole for attaching a tang peep sight serial numbers near one million; just before number two million was passed some receivers were drilled and tapped on the left side for a receiver sight." IIRC, the D&T'd receiver for a receiver sight was about '53.

I think we've got the dates close but not your serial numbers for the side prep, Pete. Dad's old m94 he bought new in 1950 has a serial # of 1709094. And of course no tang or peep holes drilled.Pete44ru wrote:.

I was citing author Robt. C. Renneberg, of the Winchester Collector's Assoc., in his book: "Winchester's Model 94 - A Century of Craftmanship".
If it was my M94, with a SN out of the range he quoted, I'd wanna contact him, so he could update his database.
