Kid's Outdoors Day in Poetry, TX

Post by 86er »

This past Sat. the Dallas Woods and Waters Club in conjunction with Poetry Shooting Club hosted Kid's Outdoors Day. In short, young people 18 years old and younger were taught archery, rifle, pistol and shotgun including safety and shooting skills. One of my sons was at a sleep-over birthday party so that left just Justin and I to attend this event. At first he did not want to stay. I ended up with a group of kids who's parents were not with them. I have a 6 year old boy, 12 year old girl (both had some outdoors experience) and an 18 year old girl that in her own words had "never been off pavement". Just befriended the 6 yr old and he liked the two girls too. The archery coach was a very patient lady that took the time to get the kids shooting good 20 yd groups after an hour of instruction. Justin was slow to catch on but figured it out finally and really enjoyed it. On the rifle range they shot a Ruger 10/22, a Marlin 39A and a Cricket bolt action. Justin won the contest to see how many times the shooter could hit the 75 yard gong in a row. On the pistol range they shot a .22 Ruger Single Six and a Colt single action on revolver and a S&W 41 and Colt Ace on the semi-auto range. Justin was a crack-shot with the pistols, routinely hitting the target near the bullseye. On shotgun there was a 410 semi, 410 single shot, 20 gauge semi and 20 gauge O/U. The boys in my group used the 410 single shot and the girls used the 20 gauge O/U. Everyone broke a few targets. I put on a little show for them, shooting targets while holding the 1100 with one hand, upside down and over my head. Lunch was a BBQ spread that was pretty good. After lunch, the groups got to pick their favorite event and do it again. My group picked archery and ended up shooting bows for another hour and a half. This is going to be an annual event the weekend after the first full week of May each year. It is worth the trip if you have youngsters.

Cool Picture:

Reasons:

1. It shows an adult expanding the horizons of a young child, teaching new skills, and with this particular discipline, often a way of life, values, and respect for life that is foundational for many other good things in life.

2. It is the kind of picture that just drives hoplophobic idiots even nuttier than they are to begin with. :D
