Home defense and rifled-bore shotguns

Post by AJMD429 »

Interesting - according to this, a rifled barrel might be the one to leave on your home-protection shotgun, if you are using smaller shot, especially. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnpjrRvFTLw

IDK................. Since I feel that HD occurs inside the home, or at a door being forced, the distances are so short (feet, not yards) that any shotload will strike so close together, as to make no diff in the result.

For example: In my 1st HD situation, when I was first married, I put the business end of a SxS into a guy's face as he was trying to force my exterior doorhandle.

Is the guy really advocating the use of birdshot as a home defense shell?

I'm pretty skeptical of his logic on the shot pattern, though if he were using buckshot I guess I could see it. I would still suggest sticking with the tighter pattern of a choked barrel or at least a cylinder bore.

I guess I saw it differently. Birdshot, at short range through a cylinder bore barrel is pretty devastating at home defense range, feet, not yards. He merely showed what happens to a pattern when fired through a rifled shotgun barrel vs a cylinder choke smooth barrel. I don't remember him advocating anything...

No, he just demonstrated the effects of birdshot through a rifled barrel at close range. Pretty interesting. Thanks for posting.

I read the info the opposite way. The rifled barrel makes the shot pattern useless. Except for little birds.

I know someone that the Hoonah police tried to murder. They shot him with 357s and 12ga shotgun at close range and he did not die. It happened on the boat dock in broad daylight. It took him a long long time to get out of the hospital, and a long time for the state to get the bill. Large cash payout, but I would turn it down if it was an option.

Not sure but I think the shotgun had bird shot in it. Birdshot is for birds. Only way I could see using it is if it's buffered with wax like the video that was posted earlier. I think a breaching type load is a far better bet for a stopper than birdshot.

Although, I know someone who was bird hunting near Hoonah who literally ran into a bear in the scrub and double tapped it in the face with birdshot. The bear lost that one. No large cash payout either.

stuff happens

At "in-the-room" range, a scattergun ISN'T..

3", 12-Gauge 000Buck, deliver a "pattern" just over 3" diameter, at 10 yards, from my 20" coach gun, with straight cylinder barrels.. At 25 yards the pattern is about 6 1/2" across.. Even 10 yards is a pretty big room, for most circumstances..

Those ten, .36-caliber balls will penetrate much better than Any size birdshot.

I've heard of failures with birdshot at close quarters as a defensive load.

I've never really been that keen on shotguns for much of anything other than clay targets and pheasants. OK, doves too.

I think I will stick to my Turkey Choke and #4 buckshot. It keeps a tight shot group of about 4" at 15'. I prefer to keep all the shot tight to put a 4" hole in any perpatrator that might enter my home. Besides, should he take a hostage, I might have to take a head shot and would hate to have it hit the unintended.

Bird shot is for birds and some types of training. I'll stick with buck shot for home defense.

Grizz,
About that earlier video, I remarked about him missing the target and you noticed it too.
Did you ever get around to trying it?

do you mean shooting shot thru a rifled barrel? I shot a couple of boxes of .410 birdshot thru a Marlin 444. that produced two concentric rings of holes thru a piece of plywood. I have no idea where the photos are. I decided that shot from the marlin was useless as far as utility goes. fun tho.

or were you asking something else?

The first time I touch off a shotgun with mag shells, in the confines of a room, what little hearing I have will be gone. I'll stick to my .45acps...although loud, they are not as deafening as a shotgun, or high-pressured/velocity anything else.

Well his findings are 100% opposite of mine.

Shooting shot through a rifle barrel, I got a H-U-G-E useless pattern.

Having shot many many things with bird shot, I don't trust it to stop anything over say maybe 30lbs or so.

I did try that with some 12 and 20ga birdshot and some 20ga 3" buck. It was all impressive, but a very informal setting and close range. I didn't miss anything I aimed at but can't state with conviction that it is as accurate as slugs. Don't know much. The 3" blew an impressive neat hold thru a 2x6.

from my playtime I think the round ball substitution for birdshot is a much better option. they impress the snot out of the gong.

Yeah, some people swear it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. I just wonder how many of them have any idea about penetration of birdshot, especially if the perp is wearing heavy clothes. :o

I have no clue who WALTER MITTY is, I am guessing you're one of those grown men that still watches cartoons.

I never stated that it would be ideal, but if that was my only option at the time. In a gunfight, you have to dance with the girl that you brought to the dance. In a defensive situation your looking 10 yards, a good defensive shotgun, rifled sights, with a good choke and #4 buck. My shotgun will typically make one solid hole approx. 3" at 10 yrds. I definitely never want to be in that situation, but would take the shot before I surrendered my arms or permitted a loved one to be removed from my home as a shield.

I'd think any responsible father would maintain some level of awareness with regard to what his children are watching on TV.

As far as that goes, Bugs and Daffy weren't really aimed at kids.

I would have to agree with this.

And again to stay on topic, he seems to advocate birdshot for home defense and from the video, he seemed to think a wider pattern was better to make it easier to hit the target. I would say a shotgun would not be my first choice. If i was using one, birdshot would not be my first choice, and if I were using birdshot, I would want the pattern as tight as possible.
