.40 Paco

Post by MtnGun »

In his book, Paco talks about the .40 Paco. Its a .30-30 necked up to .40. Has anyone worked with this?

I have not, but it sounds like his version of the 408 Winchester cartridge that was experiemented with by Winchester, but never materialized. Supposedly due to weaker than expected sales of the 375 Winchester.

Ten years ago I had thoughts of getting a reamer made similar to the 408 WIN based on the 30-30 case . But after I got a 40-65 I wasn't that interested anylonger .

Something vaguely similar was one of the writers for the American Rifleman took the 450 Marlin and necked it down to 40 cal , his thoughts were there were plenty of 40 cal 10mm pistol bullets etc etc etc and later he said he wished he had done it in 41 cal .
Parkers , Mannlicher Schoenauer’s , 6.5mm's and my family in the Philippines !

I haven't seen the article you referenced, but I don't think making a .40 cal cartridge from a 30-30 case would be the best idea. If you take a .400" projectile, add the thickness of the brass, you come up with the same diameter of the base. So it would be at the very best a completely straight case, no taper whatsoever. I can't help but think that wouldn't be the best for ease of extraction. Looks like the 356 Winchester case would be a much better candidate, imo.

What would you get out of it that you couldn't get out of a 38-55 or a 375?

Well, I'm not Paco, and I didn't work with the cartridge, but clearly bullet weight, and diameter would be two things you would get out of it.
