Wow. Look at the level of technology then vs. now, yet how devastating the results were...
Amazing all those guys around the bombs and didn't have radiation suits or anything; wouldn't there be enough escaping radiation to cook some of their DNA...???

I have no idea if this is true, but I read in an article about plutonium that if there was a golf ball-sized piece of pure plutonium on the fifty yard line, and you ran at it from the end zone, that you would be dead before you got to it......AJMD429 wrote:Wow. Not hardly........ plutonium is deadly radioactive, but AFAIK plutonium by itself won't kill you immediately.
Depending upon the exposure time & rad strength, it'd most likely take someone directly exposed to it anywhere from a few days to a year to die from the radiation poisoning.

Re: Dis Da BOMB !
With how little they knew about what they were doing, the relatively crude equipment and the level of technology back then, I'm a little surprised they didn't blow us up way before they got it to the Pacific theater. They sure had vision and the will to carry it out, though.
God Bless them for what they did. From the President down to the ground crews.

While the bomb itself was a phenomenon of science, I'd have to believe that they made a choice to keep what they could as 'low tech' as they could.
Remember that someone had to arm this thing in-flight on a B-29. Kinda like assembling a watch inside a washing machine.
It's not exactly at the level of "Insert tab A into slot B" (but it does look close), I'm sure that they preferred to minimize the problems that might be encountered by making the operation too complicated or overly intricate for that bombardier/flight officer.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Re: Dis Da BOMB !
I was a little kid, about 5 but I remember VJ night vividly. There was a party at our house and every one was so relieved the war was finally over. Our couch and chairs were carried out in the yard and there must have been 25 or 30 people there. One of Dad's old friends from California was there with 2 cases of Olympia beer. A brand that we hadn't seen in Oklahoma. Lots of celebrating that night. Dad got drunk and slept all night in the yard. Mom was not happy with him.
Thanks for the memories.

Yeah, that's why they didn't arm it on the ground - in case it crashed on takeoff.....
