Re-barreling a Marlin .30-30 to .38-55

Post by 2ndovc »

I have a Marlin TK in .30-30 that I have been thinking about having rebarreled to .38-55
I picked it up stupid cheap and it's a good shooter
But,
We can finally hunt in Ohio with straight wall cartridges and even though I have several rifles I can use I thought this would make a really fun little carbine.

Any thoughts or suggestions on who could do the work?

Had JES Rebore convert my 336 30-30 to 35/30-30 for around $250.00. Got it back in two weeks. He coverts them into 38-55 as well. I think that's the cheapest route to take.

Unscrew old barrel, screw in "new" barrel... check headspace... check lifter timing.. go shooting if all ok.

It is! I have my grandfather's 1907 vintage 94 but I hate to take it out in nasty weather.
I'm more set up for the .38-55 than the .30wcf so that's a big part of my desire for the conversion.

.

Unless a /38-55 barrel's in hane, and you can fit/headspace it yourself, I'm pretty sure a rebore is much less expensive.

I think Mainehunter has the right idea unless you want to rebarrel. I had JES rebore my Ruger GSR from .308 to .358. It shoots wonderfully! I have an 80s vintage 336 Texan .30-30 that is going to JES to become a .38-55. If you do rebore thru JES, I would be curious if the chamber handles the proper, 2.125" length brass. 1886.

My son sent a 94 Winchester 30-30 to JES and we got it back in a couple of weeks with a note that said " she shoots great". I put a 5D sight on and it helped me take a nice big doe the first season, I really love that rifle. I think it was about $225.
