Perch are hitting

Post by Les Staley »

Caught these this morning, most of them around 10 inches. Kept 55. Making nice fillets, skinless but rib bones in the fillets...will keep me from making a pig of myself..Image

Now that is one fine eatin' fish. Been many years since I have had some.

I love perch! We get some good sized ones here, but no place to ice fish for them.

We don't get safe ice every year. Sounds like it will warm up in a few days, but if I get to go out again I'll sort out about 20 to keep. 55 is too many to clean in one sitting...I'm pooped!!

Way to go Les! My favorite freshwater fish for eating, behind kokanee. Man I would love to get into a mess like you did.

Rumor has it that American Lake (by Ft Lewis) is teeming with perch.  Couldn't prove it by me.....Must not be spitting on the bait right.....(You are NOT going to ever ice fish in these parts...)

Old man at work showed me how to use an electric knife (like you use for carving turkey) to clean perch. One guy cuts the fillets off and the other guy cuts the skin off the fillet and trims the rib bones. Two guys can do a 3/4 full 5 gallon bucket in half hour to 45 minuets. Quick, easy and relatively clean. Some of the best eating ever!

I remember American Lake, from when we lived in Fircrest in the 1960s. Seems like there were perch in another area lake - Lake Kapowsin. And you are right, Blaine, there will never be ice fishing in your neck o' the woods!

Tried to stop at 20 keepers on Tuesday, but couldn't resist keeping 38.. Took Weds off, and took a buddy out today. We kept 95 today, he took them home. He has a couple of kids/grand kids that like to eat 'em. They're sure tasty!

I used to ice fish when I was a teen.

Funny story about perch. When we were teens there was a lady from Korea who ran a baitshop in town. You could ring the doorbell at 3 AM and she'd get up to sell bait.

We chatted with her and she told me how the eggs of perch and a few other fish are edible. So guess what? We cooked up a bunch of yellow perch eggs.

Believe it or not they were pretty good. So for a long time we'd keep both filets and the egg sacks from any yellow perch we caught.
