Levergun bear
one of the nurse's husbands was up on his treestand for over 30 hours at the end of last week
this fellow came in; he used his marlin 45/70 and put 4 rounds of what I think were factory 405 loads into him
he stayed in the tree, called his son on the cell, and after a few hours they went looking and they found him piled up and stiff nearby
they hauled the meat and hide out with a four wheeler; estimated 'curb weight' about 1000 pounds.

That's a real dandy....
I doubt it ever happens, but a guided black bear hunt is on my Impossible Bucket List....

High in a tree sounds like the smart place to be with that bruiser lurking below.
Wow!
Wow!
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Yes, anything that walked away after 4 rounds of 45-70 warrants calling out the QRF. That paw

Re: Levergun bear
If that was his first time up close and personal with a bear that size he did very good with his composure I think.

Re: Levergun bear
Even up a tree the sight of something THAT Big, will no doubt get your knees knocking. Wow.
Re: Levergun bear
If I shot one that big I may have stayed another thirty hours in the tree before coming down. Nice bear though.
Re: Levergun bear
I would like to have had a crack at him and hopefully inside of 25 yards !
That Ranch Dog 460-425GC pushed with a good load of H322 or the BRP 462-465GC again pushed with H322 just might be the ticket to his demise DRT !
But then again at 25 yards or less my first shot is going in his cranium !

Re: Levergun bear
That is a big bear. I don't know how it compares in size to the typical Grizzly, but we don't have bears around the Dallas area. To me, that is a real trophy. It took 4 shots from a .45-70 and still moved away, that is some amazing toughness.

Re: Levergun bear
Nice bear. I wouldn't think anywhere close to a thousand pounds though? Is that an interior grizzly or a black bear? Hard to tell from the pics. What kind of measurement on that hide?hfcable wrote:one of the nurse's husbands was up on his treestand for over 30 hours at the end of last week

Re: Levergun bear
interior grizzly .... about 60 miles from anchorage.
as to weight, i don't know, but it is a 'scientific fact' that they can continue to gain weight for weeks, if not years, after being killed.

Great that you got the meat, hide and claws and stuff. For me just getting away from that thing alive would be more than enough.
Re: Levergun bear
While I have great faith in 405 Greenbox, I'd have prefered one of Garrett's finest, or a BTB .45 cal PileDriver 525 grain with a max load of H322, or, equivalent....

Re: Levergun bear
I'd stay in a tree for 30 hours with a monster like that lurking below even WITH 4 rounds in him. Sometimes 4 rounds just pisses off the bear, even more if shot placement not right.
