New to me Shiloh Sharps

Post by rjohns94 »

Well I have had a few of these, And even gave one away to a forum member but there is a love affair I have with these rifles that keeps one in the stable. This one is a farmingdale 1874, 45-70, with a shorter 24" barrel. Has double set triggers, blade sight and a balance that I will enjoy as I pursue game in the fall.

There's just something about a Sharps, one of the reasons I got into firearms after reading stories and seeing pics of the Buffalo hunters and their guns. They draw you in like a magnet

Mike,

That's a beautiful rifle.

But ... why couldn't they spell the word "caliber" correctly? I mean really. If we drove on the other side of the road I could understand "calibre", but we be here in U.S.A. now. :D

So do you shoot smokeless or black out of it?

Smokeless? , nah , 67.5 grains of Swiss 1.5, .010 card, 500 grain govt lead bullet with SSG lube. Tried and true load for me on game up to buffalo and on targets out a ways.

As far as the spelling, I think, but don't know, it's because that is the way it was "spelt" back in the day

If you don't have it, get a copy of Paul A. Matthews' Wind Drift and Deceleration of the Cast Bullet at Black-Powder Velocities. No longer in print from Wolfe Publishing, but is available on CD from Amazon.

That load sounds like it should stop locomotives with one shot.

If that's the way calibre was spelled way back when, who am I to complain?

That shorter tube should make it a heck of a deer rifle. Nice
