Some long range levergun success

Post by Les Staley »

Getting into casting as I have a little more time since being retired. Clip on wheel weights, RCBS 45-500 BPS bullet, dropped into cold water. Then powder coated with Harbor Freight red powder, baked for ten minutes in a toaster oven to melt the powder. The 400 degrees annealed the bullets back to pretty soft. 45-70 Shilo Sharps loading this bullet with 26.5 gr 5744 chromosome at 1374 fps. Just got my come-ups for 200 yds figured out. Had a rare no-wind evening here in Wyoming and got off three shots at 200 yds.Image

Don't know what chromosome has to do with it. Should read chronograph.

Olloger. Pretty easy. Get a jar of black air soft BBs and a cool whip bowl with a lid or any plastic bowl with a recycle #5 on the bottom (lid fits snug). Dollar store. Cover the bottom with ASBBs add a half tablespoon of Harbor Freight Red. (Covers best). Put in a small handful of bullets, shake, rattle and roll em around for a minute. Static electricity makes the paint powder stick to the bullets. Take em out with tweezers or needle nose pliers. Stand on a cookie sheet. Cook em for 15 minutes at 400 degrees. Load and serve.Image

Les, no lube at all? So you're shooting them 'as cast'? I'm shooting a similar bullet in a .40-90BN, same data& I haven't got a group that small @ 100yards! Good shooting. I'd be happy with that! You're ready for the next Billy Dixon challenge in CO!

Very cool! And thanks for sharing the powder coating info, very interesting.
A Harbor Freight store just opened nearby. Just another good reason to go check it out.

Powder coating works good with smokeless powder. Not so well with black.

Griff, the ones in the picture haven't been sized yet. I'm running them thru a .459 lee push thru, no lube. I have read that for higher velocities some of the guys are adding lube. I have not got into Holy Black yet. Lots of info on PC on the cast boolet forums.

Fantastic report and shooting.

Please tell me, what are the advantages of plastic coating over traditional lubrication?

Nath, PC bonds to the lead. You can place a bullet on an anvil and smash it flat and the "disc" will still be coated. Leaves no lead in the barrel. Can be shot at much higher velocities, the softness of the alloy being the only limit. The PC doesn't deteriorate with age, load today and shoot next year. Not affected by extremely hot weather, no gooey mess. I PC and then size. If you need to add diameter to a bullet, PC twice. (Size once, PC again) . There is lots of good info on some other forums. PM me if you can't find em.

Thanks Les. It clearly works but I like the idea of a lube seasoned bore. :)

I do the same has Les but put around 100 bullets in a baggy and a few drops of Rooster jacket and coat them. Let them dry overnight and load them up, honestly don't see any difference with or without lube though so its just to make me feel better.
Great shooting Les!
