MRI in the morning

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Wish me luck, fellas. Had L3-4 and L 4-5 fused three years ago, and now big problems with L2-3, possible nerve compression, pain in both legs, and right leg going so numb I am developing "drop foot." If someone asks you to participate in the aging process, tell them to go suck eggs.

Best of luck. Spinal technology has come a long way in the last decade.

Yeah, the alternative to participating is very good. :o

FWIW, I can't do MRI's w/o a Valium IV to clam down my claustrophobia.

Ask about an open MRI. I had one of my head and neck, it was the only machine available at the time and they wanted it now. Google it and see the difference.

Keep your eyes closed. Helps with the confinement.....

I'm lucky. I can get the open MRI by asking thru the Veterans Choice Program...

Thanks, I've done open MRI's - but my MD found out that they're not as detailed as needed to see what he needed to.

However, the open MRI's are routinely used for follow-up scans.

Will pray for you, I know how you feel. Two back surgeries and prostate cancer, I have been shoved down that long gun barrel to many times. I found out that the only way I can make it is by prayer and saying scriptures, and singing hymns to myself. It really ain't much fun!!!!!

MRI's are a pain, especially when you have to do it with the back hurting. But they get the good info out of them that'll tell your surgeon where to slice, where to dice. Good luck, Bill!

Thanks fellas. First MRI I had about 25-26 years ago they slid me into the old torpedo tube. I do get claustrophobia, but managed to think my way through it. The warm, wet washcloth over the eyes helped. The newer machines just don't bother me, other than the unearthly hammering, buzzing and banging. I could do without the dye IV, though.

I am with you. They are very LOUD. Makes you wonder if the darn thing is broken.

And the contrast IV is often like someone poured gas in your veins and lit you up!

Had an x-ray years ago to check for kidney stones (IVP?). They put in a dye then practically stood you on your head for some of the views they wanted. Still I'd rather do that than the MRI with the dye. It takes longer, but you can nap through parts of it.

You think you remember how loud these are, then you realize they are far louder. The lab tech told me the next generation of imagers will be considerably quieter.

Fellas, just heard the MRI confirms leg nerve is under compression, and have been referred to a neuro/spine surgeon to see if it is the knife or advanced pain control strategy. Will let y'all know what the verdict is. I only report just to let others who might be in my predicament know the possible paths that lie ahead. We shall see ...

Good luck. I wouldn't wait too long. My nerve pain/numbness (yes, you can have both simultaneously) became permanent...

Best of luck to you. My wife just had her third cervical fusion back in May. I can fully appreciate how fun it isn't. (And she's only 47)

Prayers up.

Thinking of you. I got similar grief from arthritis and nerve damage due to chemo. Chronic pain is the most spiritually grief for us mature types. With all the grief in my health I remain loyal to the modern health care protocols. The grief was of reasonably short duration compared to chronic pain.

A lighter story about alternative medicine approach when first diagnosed with cancer 6 years ago. Some of it works but lots range from stupidity to scams. One guy actually suggested I start drinking my own urine! I asked for a demonstration and the tune sure changed. I'll leave the rest of my response for you to imagine but it did involve a little cussing.
