Could use a prayer or two

Post by Ysabel Kid »

Wednesday I was informed that my role is being eliminated and I will be "separated" from the company I have worked for, FOR 29 YEARS, effective 01/31/2017. I was assured this had nothing to do with my performance; just consequences of another reorganization. This was little comfort to me. I am too young to retire and still have kids in school, so nowhere near financially ready.

Fellas, I'm in shock. I guess I'm one of the few lucky ones that have never experienced this. Reality hasn't set in yet. If you could spare a prayer or two, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Jay, sorry to hear about the job loss, can't be a good feeling. I hope you find a better replacement and will remember you in prayer.

Jay you are going to be O.K. I am going to tell you that are more marketable than you think.

It's been two years since my job was eliminated after 29 years and 7 months. I was bumming until I started looking for jobs. I added 15 K onto the wage I was making to give some negotiating room. My first interview, I was offered the job, but walked away ,because I wanted 4 weeks vacation. I asked for an official offer to be emailed to me. Well they added 2 k onto what I was asking and gave me 4 weeks vacation. Done deal and it's been a great change of pace.

You just have to sell yourself. So hang in there.

I going to throw a pray in , but you will be just fine.

That sucks but Ben pretty much nailed it. After my little "time out" in the hospital last winter I took a sales job for something to do for awhile. I've been in the construction/ insurance restoration world for many years but this spring and summer was so unusually quiet around here with just about zero bad weather no one was hiring, at least where I wanted to be. In the last couple of months I've gotten a couple offers but have learned not to jump at the first thing to come along. The sales gig will do until I find the right fit.

You're one of the good guys, you'll be fine! :D

Jay,
Prayers are up in your behalf.

You described the EXACT same thing that happened to me after 21 years. Job is eliminated, no performance issues, etc. etc.

I went home, closed my bedroom door, and cried. Like you, I had kids in school and was too young to retire.

It was a tough time, but I learned a few things that I hope will be helpful to you.

1. I had a few things to learn about writing a resume. (Which I did.)
2. There is life after 20 some years with any particular company.
3. I had marketable skills that other companies were willing to pay for.
4. God is in control and He blesses us.

You are not in a very comfortable place, but you will grow from the experience and will be blessed as you go forward in faith.
You will be a stronger person when the dust settles on this one.

May God bless you and your family.

stay focused and be strong and never give up and you will be taken care of. things always look bad in the dark till the smoke clears and the flag is still there. Now where did i here that? but it's true.just don't let the family see you be worried they need to see you be strong to make them feel safe and secure. and that is the job you will have to never worry about being let go from.

Jay, I have every faith in you that you and your family will come through this better off than before.
Your job took you away from family life (and leverguns) way too much, perhaps your next position will allow you to get under your wife's feet and posting here more often.
Prayers up for an even better future.

Aw cr*p Jay, that stinks...

Having gone through that 1.5 years ago, I can have empathy -- but I also learned a boatload about applying for a job in today's world vs 5, 10 or 25 years ago...

I will send you a PM with my cell # --- I'd be glad to share what insights I learned, as they really helped.

Commercial roles in the chemical industry. Started off in Customer Service, then marketing, then sales, and my gig for the last 5 years has been in sales management. I'm not a technical guy though; just a dime a dozen sales/marketing guy.

Guys I appreciate the prayer and have felt results already. Please keep them coming. This could have been so much worse. I have my health (for the most part, other than my back), but more important, a loving wife and great kids who are all healthy. That is what really matters to me. I'll find something.

Kid,
Not patronizing/uplifting talk. Your an intelligent dude......far more than most. BenT and others said it very well. You have gotten very comfortable with your job and it's a kick in the azz to "do it again" and do the learning curve thingy once more.

One thing I have learned in my 62 years and that in the end, everything always works out. Keep your cool and hit the pavement. Yea, it sucks but you have people who are depending on you.

Bad luck!

I've been laid off twice in my life.

The first time my (now ex-) wife was 8 months pregnant with my oldest
son. I was given 5 whole minutes notice, and the truck broke down on the
way home. THAT was a bad day!

2nd time the electric company I worked for was bought out.

But I'm still here, and thriving!

You're a personable guy with some talent and a knack for getting along.
And you'll be just fine. You'll get off of your backside, hustle up some
work, update the resume, and find something new. Trust me - and all of
the others - you'll do all right, Jay. :)

Could be worse... I've had 42 different jobs since 1980...

I've never quit a job and have only been "fired" twice - once by the Army (Yaay Medical Discharge  ) and once for knowing more about the Laws I was sworn to operate under than management thought I should know.

Try explaining that on a resume.

I'll be praying for you brother.

I'll tell you that in 2012 the company I was with for 13 years lost the contract they had and I was let go. Don't the door hit you on the way out now git. Not even a thank you. I thought about where I might want to work. One of the places I had picked up from had their own company drivers and I was always treated with courtesy whenever I went there. They hired me on the spot and scheduled an orientation just for me, and I was off and running.
I'm making more money for less hours than I was before. At our age change is hard, but often it is for the better.
