Anybody else hooked on certain calibers/can't stand others?

Post by arjunky »

30/30, 38/55, 44 Mag, 220 swift, 22 hornet are some of my favorites.
Never seem to be without at least one of each for very long.
Reminds me, I have'nt got a swift right now.

7mm Remington mag and every Short mag of recent times. Have never owned one and probably never will.

30-30, .30 carbine, .38 spl, .40 s&w, 25-20 are my favorites.

I don't care for the new rounds that hornady has turning out lately.

.22 Long Rifle. It is what I started on, and if I don't burn a couple-few bricks every year, I'm miserable!

The .44 Magnum got me started in reloading. It will always have a special spot in my heart!

.38 Special, .357 Magnum, .45 Colt; 9mm and .45 ACP; .30-06, .45-70 Government - all are simply great!

I never saw the point of the .40 S&W (just use a .45 ACP), and other than the nice flat tiny guns now made for it, the 9mm isn't my thing.

OTOH, I like 'odd' cartridges in breakopens - 7.62x39 would be cool to see what you could 'wring' out of it in such a gun.

Maybe even a 9mm Handi-Rifle...Ha!

356 Winchester in the Big Bore 94 and 44 Mag in Ruger Single Actions. I hope to get into a Sharps though in the near future.....45/70 would be nice.

I have an affinity toward the 44 mag, 264 win mag, 348 wcf (of course), 30-06, 30-30, 45-70 and 40-65. I have many others, but these I like and understand, and have or plan to reload for.

I never understood the attraction to over-.300 caliber Weatherby Mags and Remington Ultramags. What is the point...the cartridges they one-upped still devistate on both ends.

Dont get me wrong I like the the .45 next gun buy will be a 1911 :D , I love it's history and it is a GREAT P.D. round. But in my eyes the .40 is the best, It has a one shot stop rating that is the same as the .357 125 grn J.H.P., and it fits in a 9mm sized pistol. Plus I shoot the .40 better at long ranges than any other service round I have tried. Thats just me though...

Got a thang about the .44 caliber!

Never had much interest or use in the 7mm diameter.

I do love straight walled rifle cases though :D

35 caliber. Thinkin about having my 670 30-06 rebarreled to 35 whelen and a 30-30 Win 94 to 35/30-30.

Then I'd have
38 Special
357 Magnum
360 Dan Wesson
356 Win
358 Win
35 Whelen
35/30-30

Just missing Max.

Is that Smart?
Kind regards,

Naw, can't say that I do.

Usually have 4 different loads for .30-30
Image
the above 3 150grainers along with the 125gr. HP to go in almost 30 examples in this caliber. (It will be 30 when the 6 project guns are done).

Load 6 different bullets in .45 Colt
Image
for 6 different guns in this caliber.

Then there's always the three .36 1851 revolvers, the three .45 ACP 1911s, the .38/.357 revolvers in both double (1) and single action (3) form, not to mention the two carbines, the four 12 gauge shotguns; along with a single example of a .40-90SBN, 7mmRemMag, .375 Winchester, a single double barrel 20 gauge, and lastly the .53 caliber muzzleloader.

Edit: And how could I forget the .30-06 in my M-1 Garand!

So, no, I don't think I'm stuck on a single caliber.

I like just about all of them. The only one I have that I have a problem with sometimes is my bolt action Savage in .300 WSM. That one gets a little tiresome at the range, and rarely gets more than a few rounds put through it at a time.

I thoroughly enjoy the .357, .38 sp, .44 sp, .44 mag, .22, .22 mag, 7.62x39, 8mm Mauser, .45 Colt, .45 acp, .32 H&R mag, .223, shotguns, and just about anything else.

If I had to be "hooked" on one cartridge, it would probably be the 30-30. It's one of my newest guns, and a new found pleasure for me.

I like .223, and never much saw the use for a bunch of the other .22 calibers. If i've got a good .223, why do I need a .22WRM, a .22 Hornet, a .220 Swift, a .221, or a .22-250?

I can almost justify all the .30 calibers flavors out there from application to application, but short-magnums and super-short magnums are just being silly.

I also like the 35, whether it's .357 or 35 Rem. I like the 30-30 less, but will be shooting more of it for various reasons.

I don't have an affinity for anything in the .4+ calibers. Don't really know why, they just seem clunky.

32-20 WCF and 45-70 - #1 and #2 - but really any cartridge that is 100+ years old. The 45 Colt is another one of my favorites - along with the 30-30 and 30-06

The 32 WCF got me "in to" older Winchester lever actions and is possibly my favorite.

With the exception of the 375 H&H I don't like any belted magnum case cartridge. With the exception of the 45 ACP I don't like auto pistol cartridges. Any cartridge with a rim or was invented before WWII peaks my interest. :D

I've both owned & shot a lot of different cartridges/rifles over the last 50 years - and have liked shooting most of them.

The exceptions were the larger belted magnums, like the Norma and .40+ caliber Mags (excepting the .338 Win Mag & the .375 H&H). Some of their shortcomings can certainly be attributed to stock design, and no fault of the cartridge itself.

Some I've never shot - nor care to, since they don't interest me - like the Short Magnums, Super Short Magnums, and Ultra Magnums, and legions of esoteric, old military rounds like the 8mm Lebel and the .47 Transylvanian Blood Curdler, etc.

30-30 is my favorite, followed closely by 35 Remington, 45-70, and 44 magnum. Least favorite for now is 38-55, due to very bad experience with a brand-new H&R rifle that didn't do very well with whatever cast-bullet load it was fed. That really soured me on what should have been a great caliber to shoot. I need to handload for, and shoot well, somebody's 38-55 before I get over the latter experience.

I tend to be a bit nostalgic about these things. My first SA pistol (Vaquero) and first Winchester (Trapper) were in .44 mag. And like YK, that was also the first cartridge I reloaded. My very first pistol in the 80's was in 9mm, and I'm still committed to that cartridge today with a Kahr PM9 as my main carry. I also have an unreasonable affection for the .30 carbine and the M1 I got in the 80's.

I have a love for the old, pre-1900 Winchester and S&W cartridges, and no desire at all for 20th or 21st century cartridges.
Favourite Winchester Cartridges:
45-70, 38-55, 44-40, 32-20 and 30-30

Favourite S&W Cartridges:

I had to think about this a bit. I like cartridges that go with the rifles I like. Seems I like "straight" cased, rimmed cartridges. .45-70, .38-55, .357 Maximum, .357 Magnum, .45 Colt, .44 Magnum, and, of course, the .22 LR. I think I should have but have never been able to get worked up over the .30-06. I only just recently got a .308 Winchester and that because the Savage 99 was chambered for the round. So, I guess I approach it backwards of everyone else...

I can't get warmed up to magnum cartridges anymore after having shot my 30-06's and 9.3x62 for the last two years; particularly "fast" magnums like the 257 Weatherby and 7mm Remington, both of which I sold and replaced with a Savage 99 in 250-3000 and a Obendorf Mauser 7x57. More and More at the loading bench, if I am dropping more than 60 grains of smokeless powder I'm thinking about switching cartridges.

I'll stick with my 30/30, hornet and a 22, just don't see the need to burn alot of powder any more

I used to really get under a friend of mines skin when "comparing" the 270 vs '06. He is so easy to get riled up over that topic.

I guess my favorites are the 307/308. About th ebest all around cartridge in my opinion. I also favor the22, 22M, 22Hornet, 223, 260 Rem, 6.5x55, 7/08, 30/30, 7.62x39, 7x57, 280, '06, 45 Colt, 38 Special, 357, 45/70.

I guess as long as it doesn't kill on my end then I'm ok with shooting it.

I've settled on .357 & .45-70 with a tossup between 12ga & 20ga.

Not that I think anything else is useless, but outside of the need for a .454 for Alaska, and a .308 for GP, I just can't really get excited about anything else any more.

Along with 38spl., 41 Mag, 44Spl& Mag,45acp and the 45 Colt.

Can't explain it but just can't warm up to .243s and .270s.

I like most anything with the priming compound in the rim of a balloon-head case. Although, I've not warmed to the 17 HM2 yet. I've never touched a 44 Henry round but I'm pretty sure it was cool.

I also like those descendants of the 50-110. I like to shoot Jet as well. And I think the 32-40 is a fine lookin' round and that I need an old '94 chambered in such. Most of the oldies I seem to run into around here are in 38-55 though.

I also find that I am in need of a Ruger No.1B in Swift with a Canjar trigger. I can't explain it ... I just need it.

I typically don't like the metrics. I would choose a 284 Winchester over a 7mm Remington based on the name alone. The 5mm Rem Mag is exempt based on the first sentence of this post. Though it should have been called the 20 Rem RF Mag ... I would have felt better about it. Why is Remington so enamored of the metric system?

44 mag and 45-70 and .22lr are my favorites though I don't have a .44mag currently.

38/357 and .45lc have replaced my .44mag and I like them enough. .45 acp has always been a favorite since watching "magnum pi". I have a 32 spl that is serving the role of 30-30. My everyday carry is 9mm but I chose that only as a better alternative to .32, .380. (small size, more bullets in the rohrbaugh retired my .38sp)

so between .22, .38/.357, .45acp, 45 long colt, 32 spl, 45-70, and .54 flintlock, .44 C&B, and .410 and 12 gauge, I figure I have no need for any others.

I never had any interest in 357/38 until I got my first 357 Marlin. Now, I shoot my 357's more than anything else but rimfires. Of course, my favorite is still 45ACP out of a 1911-pattern pistol.

I guess it might depend on where you live, and what you hunt. I have been a fan of the .348 since the begginning, 1962 was when I inherited my dads Long Tang Model 71. It will kill about anything I know about. The 45-70 is a grand old cartridge. But I was very surprised when I bought a new Marlin 1894 in 44 Mag. I thought my bones were broke at the first shot, definately a powerful round and good choice in a lever. I may get a 45 and 357 just to burn more of my retirement mad money.

There's really no calibers I don't like, but there are a few cartridges in some calibers that make me wonder why bother :?: About the only cartrdiges I don't have any particular use/need or want for are the 25acp, and the 9mm parabellum. :?

Yea, forgot about those iddy biddy pistol calibers like 25 and 32 ACP. I don't have any problem with 9mm, I've seen more people die from it than survive, but I've seen a guy take 4 25acp point blank to the chest and live. My wife was looking at a 32 at a gunshow once and I told here I'd rather she had a knife for all the good the 32 would do her. I could throw the gun with more energy than it throws the bullets. In fact a 22LR has more credibility as a defence round IMO.

Oh, I dunno. I bought my first .32 from the Darmstadt Polezi when they went to 9mm Para. The reason they did so, as it was explained to me, was that while the .32 is a lousy "stopper", it's a great "killer".

They were finding the fatality rate for shootings with the .32 was higher than the non-fatal wounded-arrests with 9mm.

That said, my .32 is strictly a Swimmingtrunk/Bikeshort/BUG and is loaded with uber hot (900+fps from a 2" bbl) 60gr SJHPs that expand nicely.

Besides. If a .32 was good enough to be a primary weapon for James Bond, it's good enough to be my BUG.

Gotta admit tho that 32 is cute.
I like the 380, but if I gotta deal with the pressure and noise of the 9mm I'ld just as soon have a good ol USA made 38 super. :D But there's really only one good auto pistol round and thats the 45 acp IMHO :)
