Raising the Front Sight 94AE

Post by oldmax »

I need a 'Peep' sight on my 94ae Trapper, 45 colt :
I found out yesterday, when firing a Mini-14 , That I did not need my
glasses, Rear sight came right into focus,,.

So: I plan to install a Williams 5D-94se aperture sight ( using existing holes)
But, I think my front sight will be to low...

The front sight is " brazed, Welded " ? Anyway it is not easily removed.
And I do not want to butcher the gun,

I was thinking about JB welding a Copper Bead on the top of the sight.
I could use the extra Visability and should raise it up enough...

Any comments.. Help.. Ideas ...

I think I posted on this awhile ago, But now I'm getting into the
" Doing It """

Thanks...

FWIW, I've peeped three Trappers, and none required a higher front sight blade to achieve zero - unlike the standard carbines & rifles that have.

On two, I filed a small face off the upper rear corner of the front sight blade, at a 45-degree angle, to give a square-bead effect.

oldmax,
I have an early Win 94AE in .45 Colt with the soldered on front sight that I put a side mount receiver sight on. It did not require a taller front sight. I could actually trim some off if I wanted to lower the rear sight. But I've left it as is. I've shot this Trapper out to 100 yds and there was plenty of adjustment left.

Before worrying about the front sight height, put the sight on it and try it out. I've never used one of the Williams sights that use the top holes, so I can't say positively that you won't need a taller front sight. But try it first.

I'm always trying different sights it seems :?
I put a set of XS sights on my 94AE in .44Mag and like them alot. Nice and clean.
I had a Williams FP on it and moved it to my 30-30 Trapper.
Both work very well!
My .44 is my HD Levergun and I just like the simplicity and small size of the XS sights for it.

I have never had any trouble removing the front sight on any of my Winchesters, but have read about soldered sights before.

rjsixgun,

It looks like Salvo used a dovetail filler blank. Lyman, Williams, and Marbles make and sell them. And Brownells has a really neat one they sell.

REF the soldered on front sights:
I have been told by a couple gunsmiths that you can remove these sights by directing the frame from a torch (one even said a propane torch) into the muzzle under the sight. Supposedly this will provide enough heat to melt the solder.

As I said the front sight on my 1985 vintage Trapper is tilted, but I have not made any attempt to reposition it. I'm not sure I can do it without causing damage.

Just FYI, I can't prove this.

I have a Williams FP on my 94AE 24" in .45 Colt and it works great with the factory front.
I have never HAD to replace the front sight on any Lever to get it to zero with a Williams ,Lyman or Marbles peep sight and I have 18+ of them mounted.
