Re: Couple new steam engines
Wow, those are really cool Pitchy!
I used to run some old (Mamod?) steam engines with my late father, but he always insisted on running them only with pressure-relief valves -- or a steam whistle * -- installed.
...* Ya know, to "let off steam" -- and it worked, and they sounded great too!!!
Do you put anything on those to control/monitor the pressure, or just use good welding techniques and "watch what happens"?!?!
I'm just curious, that's all, as I always heard steam was nothing to play with...
But from all your posts -- I can see it is fun to play with!

Nice work Pitchy. Those things turn up pretty good when they got a full burn going.

Lenn, they seem to run very smooth, my old Mamod would have vibrated itself off the table if not secured....

Re: Couple new steam engines
I sure enjoy your videos pard. Been a rat race around here. 15 year old ran away on his 250 Honda, was gone about a month but is home now.
I've been playing with a FAL build. Bought a South African/Rhodesian kit and got lucky scoring a new receiver at a gun show. Had to screw the barrel into the new frame which took about 100 ft lbs of torque. Now I must carefully check the head space to be sure it is correct. I'll probably post pics when I'm done.
Went to the VA yesterday and had a cortisone shot in my knee. Hard to believe how much better it is today.

Re: Couple new steam engines
Ha, my man, the Pitchster. I noticed the case before I read the posts.....thought it was a 45 L. Colt case or a cut down 45-70.
My wife thinks Pitchy is the smartest mechanical guy in the world and his videos bring some happiness in the house during an otherwise boring winter.
Yep, me and Pitchy bullshyted for quite some time last night.....another highlight. He is thinking about packing up and moving and I mentioned a few areas just northwest of here....Pottsville area....Minersville.....it's easy living there, low taxes, good ole boys run the area. I can see me and Pitchy hanging out together...partners in crime......good legal crime.....like making a steam powered log splitter....shooting rocks....Drinking beer and raising dogs........you know, the important things in life........Thanks bud---Jack

I thought it was a 45-70 too.
Sorry, bud. Ole Pitchy looks like a prime candidate for a Maineiac. The house next door is for sale Pitchy!

Thanks OldWin.
The 500 case is half inch at the mouth but tappers at the head like many are so I ran a 1/2 inch ream in it and bingo a smooth straight cylinder.
1/2 inch shaft fits perfect as is, made an easy engine that`s good enough for me as I`m not a perfectionist.

Perfectionist or not, you do good work, Pitchy.
One clever dude. Thanks for posting your projects. I got a soft spot for steam powered stuff.

Re: Couple new steam engines
Pitchy, thanks. I needed that. Fighting a cold, waiting for surgery, it's raining YET AGAIN and I have to do income taxes. Those two clips of those two swell steam engines might just have saved my life.
If you ever want to do a build-along so a total klutz like myself can see how your magic unfolds, that would be awful swell, too.

Thanks Bill, hope ya get feeling better soon.
I never have time for a build thread, we go to the shop in the morning and come out with a engine.
