OT - Rye Whiskey

Post by El Chivo »

I just realized I've never tried rye whiskey before, have to sample it.

Can anybody recommend a brand?

The only ones we can get around here are Old Overholt (Overshoe) and Jim Beam. Beam is better.

I'd recommend starting with Old Overholt. It's pretty smooth. Then go to Turkey Rye. Beam Rye is pretty bold.
Kind regards,

If the ocean was whiskey and I was a duck
I'd swim the bottom and drink it all up
Rye whiskey, Rye whiskey, Rye whiskey I cry
Rye whiskey, Rye whiskey I'll drink til I die.

Or something like that, I haven't heard that old song in years. Anybody else know it.

Tex Ritter sang it and the stanza you listed is the last one. Here are the rest of the lyrics:

Jack o' Diamonds, Jack o' Diamonds and I know you of old
You've robbed my poor pockets of silver and gold
It's a whiskey, you villain, you've been my downfall
You've kicked me, you've cuffed me, but I love you for all

It's a whiskey, rye whiskey, rye whiskey I cry
If I don't get rye whiskey, well, I think I will die

I'll eat when I'm hungry, I'll drink when I'm dry
If the hard times don't kill me, I'll lay down and die
I'll tune up my fiddle and I 'll rosin my bow
I'll make myself welcome, wherever I go

Rye whiskey, rye whiskey, rye whiskey I cry
If a tree don't fall on me, I'll live till I die

Beefsteak when I'm hungry red liquor when I'm dry
Greenbacks when I'm hard up and religion when I die
They say I drink whiskey, my money's my own
All them that don't like me, can leave me alone

Rye whiskey, rye whiskey, rye whiskey I cry
If a tree don't fall on me, I'll live till I die

Sometimes I drink whiskey, sometimes I drink rum
Sometimes I drink brandy, at other times none
But if I get boozey, my whiskey's my own
And them that don't like me, can leave me alone

Rye whiskey, rye whiskey, rye whiskey I cry
If a tree don't fall on me, I'll live till I die

Only that part because my Dad would sing it when I was young. In fact it was the first thing I thought of when saw the thread title.

Thanks Comal Forge, I never knew the rest or who sang it. I might have to see if it's available online and surprise The Old Man with it...

Yes. My dad use to sing it.

Next chorus:

It's beefsteak when I'm hungry
Rye Whiskey when I'm dry...
If I don"t get a drink of Rye Whiskey,
I think I'll just die

Never tried Rye either. Sounds like something worth putting on my to-do list. Love those old songs. Big Rock Candy Mountains is another good one with lines about a lake of stew and another of whiskey, too.

I quess it depends where you come from. In Canada rye whisky would be any whisky such as Crown Royal (the best in my opinion) Canadian Club etc. On our labels they are called Canadian Whisky. My preferred is Crown Royal, straight or any other with ginger ale.

In my opinion Templeton Rye is the best rye currently being made. It has only been on the market a couple of years, but is of very high quality. Plus, it is distilled here in Iowa.

I have fond memories of my Grandfather, and the Pikesville rye whiskey he drank all the time. I'm sure it wasn't the most expensive/best out there, but since I cut my teeth on it (literally, as a baby, and then later on as a toddler when they would leave some in the bottom of the pint and fill the rest of the bottle with water and I would walk around drinking it).

Nowadays I'm more of a bourbon drinker, but there's something about a good rye whiskey.

I thought Canadian Whisky was made from wheat, it sure doesn't taste like rye whisky. In any case they are both considerably better than corn likker.

Canadian Club has alway's been my favorite. Here is a quote from they're website......We call it rye up here.

The original light and versatile blended whisky, Canadian Club® is the only Canadian whisky blended before aging in white oak barrels. This allows the flavors of the rye, rye malt, barley malt and corn to merry, giving CC its unique, smooth taste. Canadian Club® is ideal for any occasion and goes perfectly with your favorite mixer.

The thing is, Canadian law doesn't require any minimum standard, and such booze as CC is typically NINETY PERCENT corn, ten percent rye, and is still referred to as rye whiskey.

In the US, it has to be 51% or more rye to be called that. There are VERY FEW straight ryes sold in the US.

OTOH, BOURBON has to be at least 51% corn, but may also contain rye, so the lines get blurry.

If ya like a good rye, yamight also like a GOOD bourbon usch as Elijah Craig twelve Year Old Bourbon.

(and NO, JD is NOT Bourbon. it's Tenessee whiskey, a different critter altogether ;)

Having been a rye whiskey drinker for a number of years, my recommendation is Old Overholt. Tried others (Turkey and Beam) available on the shelves here locally and found them both somewhat disappointing. Won't try either of them again. I'm sticking with what in my opinion is the best straight rye whiskey product, Old Overholt.

Great ryes are available from smaller distillers. They are not cheap and you have to search for them. The Potrero is made by Anchor in San Francisco, but only in small quantities. Sazerac is available at Bevmo.

There's a Bevmo down the street, looks like they carry Old Overholt, Rittenhouse, and Pikesville. May not have them in stock, but will stop there this weekend!

-----------------------------(update)

Ok, starting with two:

Image

After couple of sips each, I THINK I like the Pikesville better.

Old Overholt has a slightly stronger flavor and aftertaste, Pikesville seems a little smoother, same taste but not as prominent. Aroma, Pikesville has a bouquet to it, Old Overholt I can't really tell. My taste buds are shot. But I think the Pikesville has about the right balance.

Seriously, half an ounce of each and I'm not typing so good!

Years ago I had the old 78rpm record of this tune by Tex Ritter. That disc plus many others including several by Justin Tubb are lost to the ages. I only hope they found their way to a good home.

I seem to remember in Deliverance, Ronny Cox sang the Rye Whiskey song after jamming with the Banjo Kid.

Rye Whiskey

Post by El Chivo »

I can't find my original post, but I have an update, I got a bottle of Rittenhouse (standard) to try along with the Pikesville and the Old Overholt.

I thought the taste of the Old Overholt was pretty strong, and the Pikesville pretty light. Turns out the Rittenhouse is in between. Has a nice flavor, very smooth. Probably the best quality of the 3.

At Bevmo and saw they also have Michter's and a fancy RIttenhouse under lock and key. The MIchter's is $40.00, expensive but not out of reach. Maybe around Christmas I'll pop for it.

It's good stuff overall, I think I'll stick with it. I'm liking the Pikesville or Rittenhouse neat, and like the Old Overholt with a Coke chaser.

Well, I had to give it a try. Found a bottle of Old Overholt, it was $12.95 for the .750 L bottle. How does this price compare with your area? Thought that was very reasonable. The guy at the checkout looked the bottle over and stated that he does not remember ever selling any of this and didn't even know they carried it. Taste test rating was that it was pretty good on the rocks, but not as good IMHO as Ancient Age 10 Star or some of the other bourbons I prefer. However, I would be pleased to sit around the fire and sip a bottle of Old Overholt with you guys any time.

The "better" Ryes are 50-80 bucks per bottle. Too expensive for me these days.

Several variations of the song usually titled "Rye Whiskey" Here is another:

Rye whiskey, rye whiskey, rye whiskey, I cry.
If I don’t get rye whiskey, I surely will die.

If the ocean was whiskey, and I was a duck,
I’d dive to the bottom and never come up.

I'll tune up my fiddle and rosin my bow
And I'll make myself welcome wherever I go.

I'll eat when I’m hungry and drink when I’m dry.
If I don’t get rye whiskey, I surely will die.

Hiccups, oh Lordy, how bad I do feel.
Hiccups, oh Lordy, how bad I do feel.

Jack of diamonds, jack of diamonds, I’ve known you of old.
You’ve robbed my poor pockets of silver and gold.
