Busted main spring!

Post by Nath »

A few months ago I noticed my Pedersoli trade gun had broken its main spring.
After checking the price of a new one and feeling the blood draining from my wallet I set to welding it!

I didn't lose much of its strength and with some fiddling I got it to spark again. Not as reliable as it was but light up again it does. So much so I went and got me a rabbit and a fox with it.

I'm not to happy with it though. I need a new one. I have one on order, I just got to get this trade gun back to super reliable.
I took the first pheasant of our season this time with it just before the main spring broke.

Good ya could fix it but without a reheat treating the spring it won't be right.

Good ol Jess!
Sure, you are correct.
I got it to work by adding shims in the heel of the spring.
If there was no chance of a new one I would quench it in old engine oil, polish it up and draw it back to a plum colour.

Thankfully you can get a replacement, did you happen to order a spare as well?

If it happened to one I owned, I would tate the spring to a RenFest and have one of the smiths there fix it. Our local RenFest is coming in a month.

Hi Bill.
It's a shame I can't put the short videos of her "getting stuck in" on!

Nath knows his way around springs !!

About 3 years ago I was having trouble with the operation of my Marlin 990 semi-auto .22LR rifle. He said, "just replace the spring."

So I did ...... and the 990 has worked just fine ever since !!!!

Nice pics Nath...you always take nice ones.....your fox looks like it's sleeping.......your best are when your holding up the fox and gritting your teeth at it.

Geeze, how much can a spring cost? It's just a common V spring, can't find a used one locally?---006
