Any of you still hurling arrows?
I've not shot a bow for ages but when the new Tig set arrived at work wrapped in thick foam packaging I imagined an arrow boss.

I dug the old pse silverhawk out and did ok. Well it was only 15yards but it's a start....

That's a very good group, nice shooting. I shoot at least every sunday ( weather permitting ), and three or four times weekly in warm weather.
I bow hunt every year.

I’ve been shooting constantly for sixty-eight years now. Started out with a Ben Pearson long bow and Port Orford ceder arrows made from bare shafts. Moved up to recurves in my early teens that my Dad and I made using “modern” methods. Shot those for over twenty years and then finally got into compound bows. My Dad got his 76th deer with a bow at my camp on his 84th birthday….also his last with a bow. I shot my first deer at age 12 in PA the very first day I ever hunted anything. Nice doe at ten yards with a fiberglass long bow, cedar arrows, and a Bodkin broadhead. I got my 101st deer with the bow last year. I didn’t think you could hunt with a bow in England?

I've got a take down kid sized recurve stashed away somewhere. Need to figure out how to measure it for a string and make one up. Too many irons in the fire and no place to shoot it close by have contributed to it being put on the back burner for too long. I DID grab a few appropriate arrows for it a few years ago and brought them down in my suitcase, but that's as far as we've gotten so far. Really need to get it together, haven't shot a bow in decades.

AmBraCol, the long time standard for strings has been by AMO standards, (Archery Manufacturers Organization?? ) I believe that's what the abbreviations stood for. But a bow is measured down its back supposedly somehow, not tip to tip??
But regardless the confusion, a Recurve stated AMO 60" needs a string if sold stated by the AMO way= 60". But in fact that string will be 56".
By actual measurement, a recurve requires a 4" shorter string than its stamped AMO measurement. And a Longbow uses a string 3" shorter than its stamped AMO measurement.

So by actual measurement a AMO 60" Recurve uses a 56" string actual measurement.
A Longbow AMO 60" uses a 57" string actual measurement.
Sorry, but its a confusing explanation, but the way it's been for years!

Thank you! So, to make sure I "get it", measure the bow's length across from tip to tip across the front of the bow and make up the string to that length.

And if it's an old bow, I'd use B50 or B55 Dacron string. Lots of the new strings are new fast flite materials, no stretch, no give. A bows got to have reinforced tips to take the shock.
And you always got to twist a new string a lot to get the sweet spot in brace height so it shoots its best.

Nath, that PSE is a good one! I have a PSE Brute. Had another PSE before it. PSE or Bear only brands I've bought for past 30 years. Pete Shepley is in my opinion, one the best truly good guys in hunting, shooting industry! He's stayed in his roots all through. Same route as Winchester and Marlin. He was making top performance bows at prices high school kids could buy while still making mid and top line bows that compete with the best ever since the early 70's. Untelling how many deer have fell to his old PSE Nitros around here back in the 70's-80's, kids could save money and hunt with good gear from Kmart-Walmart. And his best is still running neck to neck with Hoyt Matthew's every year, and all they care about is top line, high $.

I have a beautiful old Damon Howatt Hunter recurve, used to enjoy shooting it as much as I could. Sucks getting old, it’s 55 pound and my shoulders could no more pull it now than flap and fly. I’ll have to find someone who will appreciate it and sell it along. I’d appreciate any knowledge on pricing it, thanks in advance.

Jazman, you got one the top production bows ever made, especially as far as performance! I never had one, but used to shoot a friend's often, and they're still being made and just as highly regarded as 50 years ago.
My Bear Kodiak Hunter will shoot my wood arrows I make, which are an average of 575 grains, at 165fps. A Damon Howatt of the same weight would probably throw these same arrows at about 175fps+-!
But I got the same problems as you, and my longbow and recurve are 5he same weight, 52# at my draw, but the longbow draws so smooth, it's more like it's 5# less. I got to be careful, limber up before and not over shoot.
