SPAMMERS

Post by gamekeeper »

Logged on first thing this morning and had to delete 22 spammers before I even had a cup of coffee.
It takes time deleting them as I have to go from the general forum to the admin page and back again for every single spammer.
Spammers for those who don't know are weirdos who try to put porn dating sites or other weird stuff on the forum by becoming members.
Something has changed on the admin page, it used to let me know how many minutes the spammer was actually on the forum and if they were only on long enough to register it was a clue as to whether they were genuine or not. That does not show anymore and the delete button has disappeared I am zapping them with banning user names or removing newly registered names.
This is making things a lot more difficult and inevitably some genuine applicants may get zapped.

Seriously it helps if new members have gun related names like 1895gunner and Levergunner I took it that they were genuine straight away...

Ya mean we're missin' out on all those cool porn sites...???

The first time we hooked onto the internet (about 1993) we didn't know what to type in the 'URL thingy' because we didn't know any websites, so we typed in "genealogy" since we knew friends who used the internet for that. The screen instantly popped up with a photo of a woman's face and there was something recently deposited on it that involved fertility, as evidenced by the 'dispenser' also in the photo. The problem was compounded by our blanky-holding 3-year-old standing there behind us looking to see what we were doing... It took a bit to figure out how to 'click off' the screen by finding the little 'X' in the corner of the window, during which time my wife and I were taking turns trying to distract the kid.

I'm not sure the internet has improved much in those 30 years, but thanks for helping filter out the garbage we don't need here...!

Kudos gamekeeper for the stick-to-it-ivness .
.
a second monitor could be a big help with the swinging back and forth between two instances and the copy/paste. or two pages up on a split screen. would that help?

It probably would but I'm a bit handicapped by only having a old tablet to work with.... :( I will be getting an upgrade if and when I move to live with my son in Northumberland.

I just axed about 150+ "new accounts" that were on the waiting list for approval. A quick scan down the line didn't show any honest looking usernames and they all (in a quick scan) gave appearance of the same A.I. type spambot typical idiocy. Hope I didn't mess up, but if no one's contacted the admins about a delay in their approval, then it's hard to know they're in the queue. (ever notice how that word has four silent letters?)

MANY thanks to gamekeeper for his spambot killing skills applied here. It's a thankless job as there's no way to actually zap any of the folks behind the flood. It'd be cool if we could send a virtual cattle prod thingie to do its thing on them, but so far technology hasn't advanced that far.

So John, what are you doing with the "other two"???

Oh wait, isn't "using only 2 brain cells" consistent with the UK's leaders???

But seriously -- thanks for your efforts.

Great story by our resident Doc too! I know I learned early on not just to search on "nipples" -- but to add the gun's make along with it!

I didn't have any idea that spammers or bots or whatever was such an issue. Thanks you gamekeeper and ambracol for all the work you're doing. I am not super computer savvy, but after learning some programming stuff I realize it's actually work, and sometimes a lot harder work because you're using your mind vs your back.

When I joined rossi rifleman forum, it gave a little box with "What's your reason for wanting to join?" It also asked a question like "What's your favorite gun?" Maybe something like that would help here?

Yes that would help, at the moment I am zapping spammers only by spurious email addresses and weird names.
Levergunner your name couldn't have been more authentic.... :D

I'm surprised it wasn't taken. I've used levergunner as my email for a long time, and then when I got into programming, I checked and leverguner.com was available and I was shocked since it's so cool. My friend who is teaching me programming purchased it on the spot for me (I didn't know how at the time), and then he set up a blog site for me. I don't have a lot of articles on it currently, but as the notion strikes me I add to it.

I never noticed that yall use levergunner as your ranking system before I joined.

Thanks for keeping the board clean, it's been quite a while since I've seen any of those spam type posts on here myself. I guess that I should also consider myself lucky that I wasn't zapped for having a non-gunny username. SAMSI is actually an acronym based on a contrived job title I had long ago. Mostly anyhow. We (myself and a co-worker) did embellish it a bit to make it more comical at the time.
