OT - Springfield Armory M1A - Now On Hold !
Seems I've found myself intrested in a Springfield Armory M1A either in the standard blued walnut version or the Scout version also blued and walnut !
It is my intention if I acquire one to mount a scope and possibly hunt with the thing some !
What can anyone tell me about the triggers ? Also what can be done to make them better ?
Also what is considered decent accuracy from one of these with factory ammo . Meaning Remington , Winchester or Federal 150 grain hunting ammo . Should I expect 3 in an inch and a half at 100 yards with a medium powered scope , should I expect better or should I be prepared for alot worse ?
All help is appreciated !

I'm having a hard time accessing Springfields web site to see anything !
But I have noticed on Gunbroker a short model M1A called the "Brush Rifle" I wonder if they still make this one ? I like the short barrel like the Scout , without all the Scout junk on top the handguard .

I can get 2" groups @ 100yds without much difficulty with my SOCOM 16 & Leupold Scout scope.
I had a 16lb Armscorp Mat. Match rifle for many years. Wouldn't shoot that much better.
I really like the M1A Squad Scout too. Just a little bt longer than the SOCOM

You might try looking up Fulton Armory. They are specialists in all manner of military arms.

Re: OT - Springfield Armory M1A
I've shot M1As for years, currently have a 18in bbl scout. Accuracy with open sights is about 1 1/2 inch groups at 100, the front blade is the standard width, not a NM front, with scope I would expect sub MOA. As to the trigger, sure they can be worked on, but take you gun out and shoot it first before deciding it needs modifications. They are pretty darn good right out of the box, easily capable of out shooting their owners.

Be sure and checkout Bud Gun Shop. I purchased my Springfield M1A loaded with stainless barrel from them back at Christmas. They have the best prices on the net. Even with transfer fee and shipping they beat all my local guys by several hundred dollars. Sad considering I always try to buy local but with the money saved I could purchase more guns from the locals.

If you want a REALLY accurate M1A, or REALLY accurate Garand, that's where I'd look.Rusty wrote:You might try looking up Fulton Armory. They are specialists in all manner of military arms.

Re: OT - Springfield Armory M1A
The Fulton Armory stuff looks pretty nice although about a Grand more then a Springfield for whichever model one chooses .
My local gunsmith has a NIB walnut stocked Springfield Scout in his case . I kinda like the short barrel but have no desire for a Scout scope so the mount would need to go !
But then it is my intention if I get one to put a Leupold 3.5-10 or 4.5-14 on top and I'm not so sure I'm gonna like the looks of that "short" rifle with a long scope on top !
The standard model however to my eyes should look okay with the scopes I mentioned on top (I think)!

Mine will shoot MOA with 150gr Ballistic Tip. I have a Sightron 3-12x on mine so that helps.

After checking the Leupold prices on , http://www.swfa.com for the VX3's I have decided a better choice would be a Leupold VX2 4-12AO , about $125 less
And it just so happens I have a couple of them here that float around from gun to gun !

Re: OT - Springfield Armory M1A
I bought a Springfield M1A Bush in 308 Winchester. This is a great gun and I would never sell the little rifle. Very accurate and never a stoppage with good ammo. Without scope and original sights it is no problem to get 2-3" groups at 100 meters. I scoped my Bush with the Springfield mount and a Zeiss scope 6x32 Duplex. With this combo the gun groups about 2-3" at 200 meters with match grade (or reloads)ammo. This is my first group shoot at 50 meters with open sights and 168grs. MEN factory ammo.
At the range
I would like to have a Springfield M1A Scout. Buy it if you can. Any Springfield M1A is a real performer!

Re: OT - Springfield Armory M1A
Don't know how much help this is, except that the M1A is a pretty heavy "hunting" rifle--you can find a lot more lighter guns that are cheaper, just as accurate (maybe even more so), and in the same caliber if you so desire. But also, I must add that M1A's are right up there in my book with the "best of the best" guns out there. You won't regret owning one.6pt-sika wrote:Seems I've found myself intrested in a Springfield Armory M1A either in the standard blued walnut version or the Scout version also blued and walnut !

Re: OT - Springfield Armory M1A
I can heartily reccomend the Scout Squad. It's enough smaller than the M1A as to be very handy. I loved the M14, but it is a handful. The SOCOM versions have quite a few unnecessary (for me) features. After I had mine and had used it for a bit, I realized that this is the weapon the M16 should have been.

Re: OT - Springfield Armory M1A
I was issued an M14 in the Marine Corps and qualified "Rifle Expert" with same.(2,3, and 500yrds with receiver sights) I bought a Springfield Armory "Improved" Model with a Match Barrel and trigger assy....also, put the 6 power Springfield rangefinder scope on her...Shot a Black Bear in Alaska from 400 yards...Mighty fine..and very acurate!
One of my Favs, but too heavy(IMO) to pack all day for hunting...
Much better killer than the M16 however....

Re: OT - Springfield Armory M1A
Fella's I can get a M1A full size rifle and scope it with a decent Leupold and the thing may weigh 13 pounds with a full 20 round clip !
But that is no great problem !
On the mornings or afternoons I plan to hunt , my ATV is parked about 15 FEET from my front door ! I walk out load up and ride to about 50-75 yards of my treestand . Get off walk to the tree climb up and pull up said rifle !
I might sit there for 2-4 hours , let the rifle down , climb down , walk to the ATV and ride back to the house !
About 6-8 years ago I used a Remington 700 Stainless Fluted Sendero in 7 MAG with a Leupold 4.5-14AO on top . And I would walk all the way in then ! So an M1A being humped on the ATV is no issue to me from the weight factor ! Plus it is not my intention to hunt with the thing alot if I should go through with acquiring one

Re: OT - Springfield Armory M1A
Take a close look at the Springfield Scope 6X Govt...It has an internal range finder that is balistic matched to the 7.62 Nato round...it works and is good to 700 meters. I love mine. I like Leupold Scopes too and have a couple mounted on my other weapons...
As a Marine, we packed ours all day and night...even slept with her and had to give our rifles a girls name A mighty fine girl indeed
Best wishes...

Re: OT - Springfield Armory M1A
Well once again something else has surfaced that I want more then a AR-10 or M1A .
Seems Marlin and Hornady have announced that sometime next year they will bring out the 338 Marlin Express
Now I had found a LNIB M1A National Match about 20 miles from me with 2 extra 20 round mags and a nice new military leather sling . And the whole deal could be bought for about $1300 .
I was thinking of committing to the guy tommorrow and low and behold I come on here a few minutes ago and see the post someone made for the new 338 Marlin Express !
Anyway the $1300-1400 I would spend on the M1A will just about cover (I hope) a new XLR and MX in 338 Marlin Express as I assume they will bring it out in two versions like they did the 308 Marlin Express !
Oh well maybe another time I can get a M1A

Re: OT - Springfield Armory M1A - Now On Hold !
Well, you need to take a moment and look at the big picture. If Obama (heven forbid) gets elected, that M1A just might go up 25 to 50% over night, and the cost of those 20 round mags just might go through the roof. And it might get worse then that, while leveractions will probably not be affected nearly as much, at least in the short run. Plus, given a little time, you might find a really good deal on a slightly used 338 marlin, and you might even save enough by buying the M1A now, as opposed to later, to pay for the Marlin.
So, if you think you will want to own an M1A, IMHO, now's the time! I bought an FAL and a couple of AR-15s this year, even though I havn't really been that interested in military semi-autos, very much in the last few years, but I already had several leveractions, so I figured (well just in case it goes south) better safe then sorry. The last time I got complacent, I sold a pre-ban Colt HB, for $400.00 to help fund the price of an old jeep, and almost imediately saw the price of those evel black rifles jump to $1200.00 over night, but the price of old jeeps and leveractions wasn't affected very much.
There's nothing like hindsight.

However the vast majority of my firearm's accumulation are Marlin levers so you might say it's kinda like a sickness

Lastmohecken +1! Six Point, I think your really going to hate yourself if you don't get that M1A while you can. The days of the semi-auto rifle are almost over IMHO. Last time the M1A missed getting included in the "black gun" ban. They won't be so foolish the next time. Anything semi-auto will be on the table to be banned.
