If you aren't blind or optically challenged aperture sights are best.
Scopes are a crutch.

I have one rifle with a scope on it, no iron sights. As soon as I get the irons on it the scope may go bye bye permanently.

jason, If this is a older Model 60 or one of the variants it can be returned to functioning condition for a bit of work and funds. Marlin has improved the feed and ejection system on those and they work very well now. This model was and probably is prone to problems when the actions get really dirty...

I can't answer your questions. In all the shooting I've done with the 30-30 I've stuck with the 150 and 170gr bullets.

My question to add to yours, is if you can safely push a 180gr or heavier bullet fast enough from the 30-30 to get it to expand properly?

I also upgraded to a Williams FP 94/36 sight. "IF" I remember correctly the front sight I ended up with was around .400" tall. I don't have the rifle any more, and I didn't write that info down.

A shallow dovetail can be cut in the barrel. That's what I had done with my Rossi.

It worked great. The barrel band on mine kept twisting and so did the front sight. So I got rid it and went to a solid mounted sight.
