Re: Marlin 1894's just can't shoot accurately.....
44 mag rifles have a .431 groove diameter. 44 mag handguns are .429. So if he is using a cast bullet sized for a handgun he will get horrible accuracy. It isn't a Marlin thing or a Micro-Groove thing, it's a SAAMI thing. I don't know why they spec 44 mag handguns different from 44mag rifles. I shoot...

That's another reason I switched back to a recurve. They never become outdated and obsolete. Replacement parts are always available.

That's why I switched from W748 to H332.OldWin wrote: I just like the IMR's and they are less affected by cold than 748.

Re: Safe bet powder to reload .30-30?
I have used W748 for a long time with great success. Recently I've been working with H332 that is working very well too. There are a lot of great powders for the 30-30. I even use Unique for plinking cast loads.

I have shot around my horse but not off of him. I do have ear plugs for him but mostly use them when the farrier is working on him when the construction equipment is running.

I use Desantis Speed Scabbard holsters for all my semi auto carry guns. They are priced right and have an adjustable tension.

I couldn't get acceptable accuracy with bullets heavier than 270 gr in my Marlin 1894 44mag. I've settled on the Ranch Dog 265gr gas checked and plain base cast bullets.rjohns94 wrote:Are they finicky with cycling heavier 44s?

Re: Marlin 1894 in 44mag?
They do not like SWC's, and most are overbored. I had one that the bore slugged, .431". ge SAAMI standards for 44 mag is different for rifle and handguns. .431 for rifles and .429 for handguns. I don't know why that is, but it is. I size all my 44mag cast bullets to .433 so I can use the same ...

A few years ago we went up to Montana and came back through Wyoming. While in Billings we stopped at a couple motels and asked if they offered an NRA discount, none of them did. I can't imagine they would be thick enough to do what I shouldn't have been doing with mine. Trying to cut the tail and open up the hip bone. You will still need a regular hunting knife for that.

I received one for fathers day last year. I used it on an elk I shot in the fall. The blades are very fragile, I broke two doing the gutting and skinning job. I think I could have done the whole job with one blade if I would have taken my time and stayed away from bones. Overall I feel it's a good k...

I did see one episode of program on one of the outdoor channels, that was supposed to be a fellow who was going to try and take one of all North American big game with the first rifle his father gave him.A Winchester 94 in 30-30. I have the Skinner Rimfire sight on my H001. It was too high for the original front sight so I installed the taller front sight from the Henry 22 magnum.

My full size 1911 is a Kimber Classic Custom and my compact is a Kimber Tactical Ultra. You can use the full size magazines in both guns but you can't use the Ultra's magazines in the full size gun.

Not hardly, that price doesn't stop non resident hunters. If it wasn't for the NR prices, my tag would cost alot more than the $46 it does now.Dave wrote:You guys have it rough! No tags? A tag for $500? They must want to put an end to hunting in your area.

My favorite load is 180 gr Nosler Partition over 71 gr of IMR 4350 in a Federal cases ignited by CCI LPM 250 primers with a COL of 3.365 shot out of an old Ruger 77. I worked up that load about 25 years ago and haven't mess with it since. I've used that for all the big game Colorado has to offer and...

Only the Cowboy models have 24" barrels. They are hard to get and expensive if you do find one.
