Re: 32-20 Results

Rost-- Well done, sir. A lot of our deer in my area run about the same size as your listed specimen, so a 32-20 WCF would likely work for me. I haven't tried that (yet), and it's hard to take out the Marlin 94CCL for venison when there's a fine old '73 Winchester in 44-40 that throws a mope and gets...

Re: OT - Vintage Winchester 22 bolt guns

Some right GORGEOUS 22s featured in this thread! Thanks for posting the pics. I have a real beater of a Winchester bolt 22, a Model 67--single shot, pull-the-striker variant that was kind of an ugly duckling........until its first range trip. Fed ammo it likes, that rifle will SHOOT. It came with an...

Re: Switching from jacketed to lead in leverguns questions

The 44-40, 44 Mag, and 45-70 have slower twist rates than the 30-30 has, and I've found that the gas check application helps prevent skidding over/through the rifling by the bullet. Not sure how that works, but the much harder gas check "grabs" the lands and likely gets pushed very firmly ...

Another one here whose "short list" includes "Open Range". Add on "The Outlaw Josey Wales", and "Tombstone" is worth seeing a few more times.

Re: Bullet casting and slugging the bbl

Bwana Dave-- Knowing the groove diameter AND throat diameter of a given barrel or cylinder is valuable information. Most modern guns adhere fairly closely to nominal specs--except when they don't. Not being a smart aleck here, but some examples vary--regardless of make or nation of origin. Classic e...

Re: Ballistics, 32-20

The 32-20 WCF is legal for deer hunting here in CA, and given the description of the deer you're after--the 32-20 sounds adequate for the work. Such hunting is outside my experience, but the 32-20 and 30 Carbine calibers certainly are not on small game and varmints. The flat-nosed 32-20 bullets at 1...

Re: New Model Blackhawk?

Clarity is key--and J Miller presented same. Newer shooters have a BIG hill to climb getting a handle on nomenclature, and any assistance us Old Folks can lend in that effort is a positive thing.

Re: Sportsmans Warehouse in Victorville,CA

A shame to see SW fail locally, but as far as gun stuff goes--Bass Pro isn't real impressive, except gun prices--which are about average for local shops. Ammo and components are priced high and not in great depth. Victorville was VERY poor placement--my understanding was that Corona/Norco was suppos...

They should just let those poor buzzards die with dignity, and join the now-extinct megafauna the condors dined upon 10,000 years ago.

Re: POLITICS - Sheriff Begins Taking Away CCW Permits

I was a CA LEO for 28 years, and I couldn't have cared less whether taxpaying soccer dads and Tupperware moms had PPKs and Chief Specials in their glove boxes or waistbands. Now, a gang-banger with a Raven or Lorcin.......THAT interested me. A felon with an AK made my day. I worked CRIMINALS, I didn...

Re: OT - CZ-75B vs Browning Hi-Power

I am very fond of both pistol models. As pointed out above, the two pistols are quite similar, excepting the double-action feature on most of the CZ-75B variants. Dunno if it matters in your case--but the CZ-75B in 40 S&W has a MUCH lead-friendlier twist rate in its barrel than do most 40 S&...

Re: .30-30 loads, going back to square one

My 30-30s have all been very user-friendly in terms of practical accuracy. By "practical accuracy" I'm talking 2.5"-3.0" five-shot groups at 150 yards with just about any 150 or 170 grain bullet, jacketed or cast. More important--the first shot from a cold/clean bore goes within ...

Thanks kindly for the warm "Welcome Back", gents. J.N., the range is operated by the gun shop mentioned above, it is a few miles southeast of Inyokern. Family membership is $25/year. It has metal impact plates at 25, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, and 600 yards, plus berms to set up paper targets...

Not-so-new Guy Is Back

In some past life I was known as Deputy Al, but the slings and arrows of keyboard cop bashers (not here) convinced me to submerge that moniker and choose one a little more generic and less inflammatory. Good to be back, still levergunning and six-shooting as much as ever--and moved to a more gun-fri...

Re: 32-20 Pet Loads?

This is a revolver-intensity load that Ken Waters listed as his "Pet Load" in the article series and book of the same name. I have found it to be accurate and mild in my Marlin 94CCL, S&W M&P, and Colt SAA. 115 grain cast bullet (Lyman 311316 or my revolver-specific Mountain Molds ...
