Go ahead and get a 45-70. If your like a lot of guys I know who really enjoy shooting. You'll go through several smaller calibers until you get to a big bore and the 45-70 is great to load for.

Though I have owned quite a few more, I now have 8. 4 long and 4 handguns and may get rid of 1 or 2 of these but I have quite enough ammo for each. Can't see hoarding a lot of anything except maybe ammo ----------- and maybe toilet paper.

I have 2 Winchesters. One is a late 60's carbine that will shoot MOA with a tang sight. The other is a Canadian Centennial with the 26" octagon barrel that has only shot a handful of ammo. However, my go to gun is still the Marlin 1895 cowboy 45-70.

I have always heard you shouldn't use regular gun type oils on one of these as over time it will cause the stock to break down and the stock is a intergral part of the workings. Rather you should use powdered graphite.

The cartridges are not excessively long in fact they are much shorter than the max. COAL calls for but still they fail to feed. From what I can find out this is not a uncommon problem with this action and the remedy is to return the gun and allow them to replace the carrier.
