OT: 8.5" barreled Rem 870 12 gauge

Post by Modoc ED »

Yesterday, while going through some older threads, I ran across a thread by "Camp Cook" about a Mountain Grizzly he had killed:

http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... izzly+Bear

In his thread, he talked about his son using a ""Dlask 8.5" barreled Rem 870 12 gauge"" shotgun. In one of his later post in the thread "Camp Cook" posted a picture of the shotgun.

Will someone please tell me how a 8.5" barrel can be legal? At least as far as Federal law is concerned, 18" is the shortest a shotgun barrel can be.

If you look at his location, it is British Columbia. Canada has very different laws concerning short barreled rifles and shotguns. They are perfectly legal to own up there. Unlike Kalifornia where a squirt gun is a dangeous weapon that must be regulated

Duhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! I did not notice the British Columbia location. Another Senior Moment!!!!

Oh well, at least it brought a great hunting thread back to the fore-front. That was one heck of a bear.

Don't feel bad. I didn't know that either. I just happen to work with some NATO forces from Canada and asked the question. Sure enough, they are legal. :D

Gents,

Those short-barreled sotguns are perfectly legal in the United States IF the ATF says it is alright, AND your state and/or local police department does not object to it AND you pay the correct tax. The tax is $200.00 for a "sawed-off" shotgun that has a barrel of less than 18", AND it came from the factory with a full-size buttstock. The tax is just $5.00 for an "any other weapon", which means that the shotgun came from the factory with a pistolgrip ONLY, BEFORE you cut the barrel. You fill out the forms, send them to the ATF & your local police, and go through a Class III dealer, then cut the barrel & do the "transfer", I think.

FYI - there's another company up here that just started importing 15" 870 copies with detachable box mags. VERY tempted to grab one of these. :D

And then, on the other hand............................It could have simply been a typo, with a "1" missing from 18.5" .

I have a few bad keyswitches in my keyboard too, come to think of it.

Back in the 1980's, my Commanding Officer showed me a shotgun that appeared similar to this photo. He bought it through the legal channels described above.

Just found this thread...

Yes the shotgun has a 8.5" not a 18.5" barrel.

It is totaly legal to own it here.

It is not legal to hunt with a firearm that has a barrel shorter than 12" you can use it for defense though.

In this case he was not hunting but using it for protection.

Also Dlask makes 12" & 14" Rem 870 12 gauge barrels I have a 14" Dlask barrel on my Rem 870 Express.

The key to using a shotgun in a grizzly defense situation is to use the toughest slugs you can get your hands onto.

We use 3" Brenneke slugs.

The Remington 3" Magnum Buckhammer is a heck of a slug too. Even the 2¾" version is one tough round too.

Can't get Dixie slugs up here or at least haven't found a source yet.

I need more info on the Sledgehammers and have never found them here either.

What I was trying to say is use a slug that is constructed of hard materials unlike the soft Foster styles which are great for black bears just to soft to penetrate much in a grizzly.

Radio Shack has a pretty good wireless keyboard and mouse for under $30, I think. I really like mine.

I was going thru my pictures of the hunt ,here is the only one that I could find that had the short shotgun in it.

It is leaning against a log behind my left shoulder.

You can see the size of the bears body very well in this picture it weighs somewhere around 750lbs to 800lbs so you can imagine the size of the grizzly that carried it away.

Sorry for how graphic the picture is I'll remove it if anyone has an issue with it.
