Pawn shop coach gun find questions

Post by M92nut »

I am always reading about peoples' pawn shop finds on this forum and others but have never seen anything great myself. The prices on the firearms in the pawnshops around here in Gwinnett County, Ga have bordered on the absurd. I think I got lucky a couple of days ago when I found a 12 ga. Chinese (yeah, I know) SxS coach gun with exposed rabbit ears, no safety, Century import for $99.00 in LN condition. I bought it, told my wife not to buy me anything for Christmas "because I got it covered" and got to admit, it looks good in my safe next to my leveractions. One question I have that maybe you guys can answer-When I cock the hammers back and gently release them forward with the triggers and thumb, the hammers do not go all the way forward and engage the firing pins, they stop about 1/4" from the firing pins. I can however PUSH the hammers forward by hand and then they will engage the pins. Is this because I have not loaded actual shells and let the inertia of the hammers carry it forward or do the hammers just cock the triggers and not actually engage the firing pins? Also how do you take the forend off this thing? It does not have an inletted lever under the forearm like I see on some SxS's? Thanks

M92nut;
Without the gun in hand it is difficult to tell since both models exist. However, with the action open you can see if the firing pins extend when you push the hammers forward. That should answer your question.
If the hammers do not go forward with the action open you can move the pins with your finger. If what you see on the outside happens on the inside, the hammers are doing the same thing when they hit the pins. Rebounding hammers on SXS's are common.

That sounds like the hammers are of the rebounding safety type. After dropping(firing), they rebound to a "safe" position, off the firing pins.

If there's no visible forend latch, either an end tip button or middle lever/slide, then it's most likely a "snap-on" forend - removed via prying the front edge of the forend away from the barrels with the fingers only. That will "lever" the forend off the action knuckle.

I looked at a shotgun that sounds simular to the one your talking about. I was told that the exposed hammers are cosmetic only and do not actually fire the shotgun.

M92nut, I live in Gwinnett Co, GA also.

I had to do a double-take when I first read this -it's a small world.

I live in Lawrenceville, near the mall of GA but before 85 on Buford Dr.

I can only agree. The pawn shop owners all seem to be pretty hip to gun prices, but Paul down at Hilltop Pawn is a good guy to deal with in Snellville. There's a guy in Conyers at Phil's Pawn Shop who gave me a pretty good deal on a nice pistol. The trouble with Phil's is they never clean the guns, so if they come in dirty, they go out dirty.

He still has a bunch of levers and some older WWII type stuff.

He's got a Win 92 from '65 that looks a little rough bt he only wants $250.00 for it.
Whatchu know 'bout that?

That chinese SXS hammer gun is a loose copy of the rossi SXS hammer gun. It even has coil over strut hammer springs. The hammers are true hammers that slam forward and slap the firing pins then rebound to a safety notch. If the hammers rested on the firing pins the pins would stay buried in the primers making the gun hard to open.

Look on the very front of the forearm and you shoud see a small button sometimes recessed. Pushing it should allow the forearm to come off.

Nate-As usual, thanks for the great technical info, I do appreciate it. On a side note I bought the video and springs from you and it really gave me the confidence to dissasemble and work on my Rossi. I need to order the mag plugs next from you after listening to your explaination of how they swell-Thanks

Scott64-Howdy neighbor!! I am by the Mall of GA myself, actually right by North Gwinnett High School, drop me a line and maybe we can go shooting up at the Ga WMA range north of us!! I think there is another Levergunner 'round here as well but I cannot recall his name. Small world indeed!!

If you guys don't mind a bit of a drive, Nathens and Chatsworth Pawn in Chatsworth Ga. usually have good deals. I have found some real lever gun treasures at Chatsworth pawn. They are both located on 411 hwy on the opposite ends of town. I usually drive down every couple of months or so. I found a nice winchester pump 22, minus front sight, at Nathens for 180.00 about three years ago. The last time I visited Chatsworth Pawn, they had several original and reproduction SxS shot guns.

It sounds like you got a good deal to me. I have seen them NIB/LNIB for around $220-250. For me, any of those prices are alureing considring the cost of a "cheap" american made double.
