OT - Favorite DA holster

I am looking for a holster for the new 44 spcl I picked up yesterday.
Thinking about the Simply Rugged Long Hunter or other suitable
holster for a hunting sidearm. I will make a pair of Fuzzy Farrant
type grips for it out of ebony.

What are you using and what are the pro's and con's?

I can't help you with the holster idea but just let me say that I am very jealous

That is one sweet looking revolver. Is that from the new "Classic" series? I have been toying with getting one of those.

That gun deserves a fancy rig. Here are a couple of mine. The 1st is a El Paso, the secound is alfonso of hollywood. There also are many cheaper rigs and makers out there too. Nice hogleg!

That pic shows the gun more than the nice holster - but you can see it. It's an El Paso Saddlery Street Combat rig with floral carving and edging. Fully lined. Very comfortable and holds the pistol snuggly but yet allows easy draw.

I have a knife, buckle and conchos to make a rig but I have alot to do before
hunting season and was looking for a utility holster for this fall's hunting in
a small local wilderness area. I will be making a pair of Fuzzy Farrant style
grips for it next weekend (roughed out some ebony today) before I even shoot
it, round butt grips and my large hands don't go together. I had FF grips on
a Lew Horton 624 in the 80s, best grip ever! Look like these pics I stole:

I got a 3TP from Levergun Leather for my 629 4" but I also have a Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake for it. Rob's holster can't be beat but that is near to a BBQ gun. I think I'd put it in something nice, maybe a Mernickle 6 with tooling and inlay. I ordered a plain Mernickle for my USFA SA but it hasn't arrived yet.

Here's mine w/ Eagle stags and El Paso saddlery, Tom Threepersons holsters.
I love this holster. Rides high and tight on the belt. I need to order a couple more
for my SAAs.

This is my El Paso Saddlery holster. The cartridge belt was made by the legendary Bob Marrs of Amarillo, Texas. He makes a few saddles now, I think.

I favor the Tom Threepersons made by El Paso Saddlery. Proven design and top quality craftsmanship.

I like the high ride pancake style. Mine was made by Baker. Don't think you would be unhappy with a Simply Rugged.

The only other thing I've seen that trips my trigger would be a pancake with a thumb break.

It's a 21-4 made in 2007.
I like thimb breaks as well, used to have the Lew Horton 624 w smith holster

Call me a repetitive nerd, but... I have four of these: Safariland Pancake, two each for my mdl 65 S&W and Combat Comm, one in black, with the other being brown. No sense having my holster clash with the rest of my outift! I've used them in plainclothes, concealment and for hunting. I like the secured feeling the thumb break provides, carried high and tight, it is out of the way and fairly unobtrusive.

This is a Hunter 4500-4. I modified it by trimming the top and removing the strap. I securely holds any of these down to my K22. BTW - that is a great looking gun you have there.

My favorite is an old Bianchi thumb break in a basket weave pattern. It was made for a 6" S&W K-frame, but it fits my Colt Old Army just as well. It's forward canted a little, just enough to make the draw of a 6" revolver easy.

Some of those others are real pretty, though.

Oh, yeh, pros and cons. Pro is, it keeps the pistol right where I can reach it, and tight against my side so it doesn't bang around on brush and stuff. I'll have to get back to you on the cons, haven't found any yet.

Rob is sending me a floral tooled Sourdough with two matching cartridge slides.

I'll post pics when it shows up. Think I'll go buy more ammo now!

Good call. Rob is a first-rate gentleman and a fine holster maker! I've got one of his for my kit gun, and it is a perfect match.

Bsaride , please post a pick of your new holster when it arrives. I have a Simply rugged holster for my sp101 and love it.

I'm pretty fond of Kramer's Horsehide Belt Scabbard. His horsehide is incredibly tough, and the design protects the hammer & sights. It's also quite secure, despite the lack of any thumbstrap or thong. As a matter of fact it took considerable break-in just to get the gun to come out consistently!

I've got an El Paso Threepersons as well, too much gun exposed/unprotected for my taste. I still need to get one of Rob's Sourdough Pancakes, they look like a great rig. I've got one of his chest rigs for hiking & backpacking use and have no complaints.
