Calculating rifling twists?
is there a formula to figure out twists for caliber compared to weight. I.E. 30 cal 150gr RN could you get by with 1-14 or even 1-16. In looking at the .30 Herrett it shows 150 gr at 2000FPS and it stabilizes.(in Hornady 7th edition) I also shoot 170 Lee RN's at about 1300 with no evidence of keyholing in .30 herret. thnaks todd
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Todd;
here is an interesting link that discusses twist from several angles:
http://www.uslink.net/~tom1/twistrate.htm
It even includes a calculator to help with the computations!

This article also has lots of information and background on how the stuff is arrived at . . .
There are a couple of useful tables, by length (the 'real' determinant) and by weight (what we usually use).
