I was kinda surprised to see that this book by Robert B. Parker was being made into a move. He's the guy that writes all the 'Spencer' books...(and remember 'Spencer for Hire' series on TV)?
I didn't find the book to be anything great. It was an easy read and mildly entertaining, but didn't find it 'movie stuff'.
However...the movie might be better than the book...that happens!
Oh yes...Parker wrote the Jessie Stone books that were made into TV movies starring Tom Selleck also.

Looks entertaining enough to me. Might wait for DVD release, though. :)

I'm a big fan of Robert B Parker and read Appaloosa several years ago. It was an entertaining read in the "Parker" mold.

Plot (no spoilers): Two guns for hire start to clean up a town and establish order, woman comes to town on the train, both guys fall for her. Robber-baron bad guy pushes back at the two hired lawmen, things come to a head with the bad guys and with the gal . . .

I hate the fact it stars the very antigun Ed Harris, but I'll probably have to see it anyway. I just don't understand how Harris can take money from movies that feature terrible guns

Now you went and spoiled it for me. I did not know he was anti- gun. I always liked him . I will have to put him on my watch list.

Is he anti-gun? It's an "Ed Harris" film -- seems odd he'd make a movie with so many guns if he is...

In any case - I saw it, I enjoyed it.

I saw it - I enjoyed it -- it won't be for everyone.

Not non-stop action - but not a love story either.

I saw it just this morning, & I have to say, I enjoyed it as well. Matinee's only 5 bucks in my necko'the woods, anyway. It's nothing like Brando's movie. I thought Harris & the other guy Vigo put on a good show with each other & individually. One thing I was impressed with was the more realistic sound of gunfire they seem to be using lately, at least in this western & another I can think of, "Open Range", which is a very loud, short-duration pop, sometimes followed by an echo from the guns being discharged out in the wide open spaces, instead of that phoney Hollywood sound effects stuff they use. It sounded real to me, at least. This will be a welcome addition to my home video DVD xcollection asap. Thumbs UP!. jd45

Heck for all I know Tom Selleck could be an anti. I just plain don't want to know anymore. I like Ed Harris, I'm gonna cover my ears and "I'm not listening to you" until I forget you said that. Whatever damage he might do with my $7 is going to get done no matter what I do.

I enjoyed the Jesse Stone movies enough to start reading the books, and that got me started with Spenser.

I saw it yesterday. I liked it. The plot was a little weak. The gal (Rene' Zellwigger) didn't only get off the train, she pulled a train on everyone in the movie. As Ed Harris put it in the movie "She'll screw anything that ain't gelded". :P Good stuff. Open Range was much better. Good entertaining movie, the end is where it got weak. Bragg the bad guy turns from ranching and cattle to saloon owner with no explanation or tie in. WTF? Probably a poor job of editing.

Tom Selleck is very pro gun by the way.

Tom Selleck is a gun owner and member of the NRA. He seems more independent than anything else is his stated politics. I sure miss The Duke, General Jimmy Stewart, and all of the others who were truly gun owners and supporters of freedom. I will wait until Appaloosa comes out on video and rent it. I must admit to liking Viggo Mortenson's acting.
