Went elk hunting yesterday kicked out 2 bulls but couldnt catch them had a good day in the saddle ran into 3 swamp donkeys 2 young meat bulls and a cow. danny

Tamarac,Larch trees loose their needles in the winter. They are not Evergreen.

Larch trees loose their needles each fall as strong as dougfir or better makes beautiful wood floors. Yea those larch needles can itch they always end up down your neck and when they cover a downed log makes it look like a bedded elk, winters arent too bad here they call this area the banana belt of MT though the winter of 96/97 I had 6' of settled snow covered up the fence posts and drove out alot of pilgrams. The above photos are only 3 miles as the crow flies from my place, the Cabinet Mtn Wilderness is 2 miles west of me Iam on the east slope of the cabinets . danny

20cows, Its not to bad here the coldest ive seen it was 32 below not counting wind chill makes you appreate a cup of hot coffee, I'd be guessing an average winter temp is somewhere in the 10 to 20 degrees range sure makes the horses woolup for winter too, now on the east side of the divide because of the wind it get cold Ive seen cows, horses and mules with cropped ears and thats funny looking on a mule. This last year we had 155" of snow on top the cabinets. Sorry about your freind its hard to loose the good ones as your life is a little more empty.danny

The plains of North Dakota is a place you can become fast acquainted with the meaning of "cold". It's not unheard of to be -100 F with windchill. And, it can get colder than that pretty quick.

Kim, If I hunt a infested area I use a 348 with 250 grners most of the time i use a 30 wcf but I always have a belly gun ( short bbl DA 357 with HC BuffaloBore ammo) have had the big bears come in on me you cant wrangle horses pack game and ride with a rifle in your hand. Last week a freind saw a griz being skinned at a taxidermy shop nobody would say who or why it died, heard later that a out of state bow hunter was killed and eaten weekend of the 19th Oct, F&G (feds) are not talking about it same as 7 years ago out of state bow hunter killed and ate, saw the sheriff tow the vehicle, feds said he committed suicide and the bear came in and ate him but no offical report, who drives from the east coast and kills themselve on a wilderness bow hunt? danny

I always carry a side gun while in the woods. Especially while riding. Nothing worse than your horse taken off over the ridge with your rifle while a Grizz is coming down on you for lunch.

Dunno bout the snow so much as the cold. At minus 60 you can hear a mouse pfart from two miles out. Perhaps more a phenomonon of temp rather than the snow itself?

Maybe that "suicide" was a matter of conveniece. I'd rather be dead when eaten. But then, I'm a terrible shot counter... I'd likely empty my sixgun into the bruin, then realize that it was going to be slower rather than faster.
