Winchester mod. 71
A fello offered me a mod. 71 deluxe, long tang ,bolt peep, sling swivels still att. gun and wood @95 maybe 96%
I have not seen an earily deluxe 71 sell at a gun show for about 8 years. The guy is asking around 4000.00 for it I might be able to trim off a little but not much
what would be a fair price for a gun like this one in your area??
thank you

Re: Winchester mod. 71
Wow - way too much IMHO. I'm no 71 expert but that's way high.
If you are looking for a good one at a fair price, I'd post that question - the guys here are likely to have a bead on one or be able to put you on the trail to one anyway....

Re: Winchester mod. 71
I was at a gun show last Saturday. The Winchester collector guy was there with an assortment of Winchester model 71s. He had one similar to the one you described priced at $2200.
IMO he's off by close to 2k. He might find someone to go $2500, but he'd have to wait for the guy who is looking for his exact rifle.
I'd pass on it in a big way.

Re: Winchester mod. 71
Its worth every bit of $3,000-$3,500 (retail). Long tang, bolt peep, deluxe Model 71's in the condition you describe are the most desirable of that model. Serial numbers mean a lot too---the lower, the more valuable. Just be sure you know what your buying------no extra holes- no refinishing of any parts, good fitting wood, etc.
Since Model 1886's have gone through the roof, collectors are turning to the next best thing--the 71. Post war short tang deluxes bring about 30% less.
Show the man about $2500-$2800 CASH and then tell him about the economy. The green stuff works wonders.---------------Sixgun

Re: Winchester mod. 71
I would have to agree with Sixgun on this. The "deluxe", "long-tang", and "bolt-peep" are all attractive options. I can imagine paying $3200 or so for the rifle ... maybe not $4k. There's always the chance that he'll stumble into someone willing to go that high ... just like this one that's very similar to the one you describe and actually sold for $3925 back in September. I guess it depends on how the bluing looks ... does it have much carry wear on the underside of the receiver, is there much blue wear on the checkered steel buttplate, etc.
I believe jnyork has this same gun you're describing except in the carbine configuration. I'm sure he wouldn't part with it for less than $7k. Obviously, that's the carbine talkin' there.
I think mod71alaska probably has good insight into these. I have a few 71's but I haven't bought or sold one in perhaps 10 years or more. I keep an eye out on GunBroker ... you know, 'cause you never know when you might need another one.
Here's a later deluxe, Lyman side-peep, short-tang that's priced at $2500 on GunBroker that might move at that price ... certainly it would if the economy were in better shape than it is right now.
Here's another in the same configuration as the one above with a Buy-It-Now set at an amazingly insane $6000. I'm sure his reserve is over $5000 ... so this one is unlikely to sell up there.
If you're going to shoot it, you'll also probably have to reload for it unless you can convince one of us here who are hoarding the last cases of factory 348 (X3483) to part with some of it. Every year Winchester promises to make another "seasonal" run of it but they always seem to forget. You can still get it up on GunBroker for $2.50 or more a round and there's also Grizzly Ammo which is premium stuff for about $3.20 a round. This is shocking to me, but I suppose it's not out of line given what I've paid for other ammo recently.
I've shot about 40 rounds of the Grizzly with the 250gr Hawk bullet and it is definitely stout stuff.

Did you noticed the buyer of the $3925.00 Win 71 was a non rated buyer? The more you pay for an education...the more you learn...sometimes.

Not over $3000.00. $2500-2750 is closer. Condition-condition-condition!

If I were standing in front of a 98+% deluxe, long-tang, bolt-peep and I had $4k in my pocket ... I might not buy it, but there certainly would be several beads of sweat built up on my forehead from the stress.

I figured it would be about 3000 and I would have give him that there on the spot but when He said 4000 I just had to walk away
My dad had a collection of 71s in the earily 80s, 7 of them in all....standard and deluxe... long tang, side rec. peep, and barrel sights only. The 7 one was a deluxe w/red pachmier pad very late gun possibly correct???
if I am to get one again it would be a long tang because my hand does not fit well on a short tang
I did pick up a few nice levers this summer I'll half to post some pics later
Gun show last weekend cowboy where were you!!?????? And dont say working I wount believe you he he.
thanks for all your replies and time

I thought if there was anything good at the show, you would buy it during set up. Saved a 100 mile trip, besides I'm still trying to kill something with my muzzle loader.

Re: Winchester mod. 71
I see 71's very simliar to what you are describing, at our local gunshow for usually around $1800 to $2200. Occasionally a little higher but not by much. I bought a couple in the same shape a couple years ago for $1300 a piece.

Re: Winchester mod. 71
I gave almost $3000 for a more or less unfired, like new, late model Deluxe 71, around 18 months ago at the Tulsa Gunshow. Mine is short tang and came with a leather sling and sling swivels. Those swivels alone are worth over a hundred dollars if you have to purchase a set.
This last fall show, I seen several much rougher model 71s priced for $3000 or more. Of course I don't know if any actually sold or not. An eairly long tang is worth more, if it is minty and 4000 might not be out of line, but unless I had just came into an easy chunk of change, I doubt I would give it.

Not a bloody chance! For that hard earned amount, a nice extra light 1886 .45-70 can be easily had. IMO, 71s haven't reached that level quite yet. Even 3K is a bit too high. It seems like everyone is trying for top dollar, and then some. Who knows, list it long enough and somone will surely bite.

Re: Winchester mod. 71
I've got my dad's long tang, serial # 4079 with bolt peep, original swivels, and a real beauty. He gave $115.00 and got 2 full boxes of of Silver Tips with it, and a nice leather covered gun case, in 1941 . I'm 64, that was 46 years ago he handed it to me, and someone can maybe buy that one after I'm pushing up sod. Good gravy, I love that rifle, never saw another one with the wood this one has either.

Re: Winchester mod. 71
I guess I'll have to disagree. I don't think it is worth any more than $1500.00 MAX.
I see nice ones all the time at gunshows between $1100.00 to $1500.00 I sure wouldn't pay any more. To some other it may be worth the price. I just think folks are way too proud of thier pieces.
Just my $.02.

Pathfinder,
If you see a nice one at a gunshow for $1100, buy it and put it on gunbroker. You'll make $600 in seven days. Better yet, tell me where it is and I'll buy it.

Re: Winchester mod. 71
I guess it's kind of a matter of where you live. If you're out West or up in the NorthEast they may be more prevalent. I'm down here in Florida and though we see a few skraggly looking 86's at the shows ... there aren't a lot of 71's on the tables. When they show up, they want pretty good money for them. In the last 20 years, I have seen exactly TWO on the used rack at local gun stores and I walked out with one of them (LNIB Std side peep) for $800 back in 1996.Pathfinder09 wrote:I see nice ones all the time at gunshows between $1100.00 to $1500.00.

Re: Winchester mod. 71
That rifle in that condition will pull $2,500 minimum on the internet auctions and probably over $3,000 if it is truly a 95%+ rifle. If ANYONE is seeing a 95% deluxe long tang bolt peep anywhere for under $2,000, you should do whatever you can to buy it. They haven't been there for several years. I sold a similar rifle rifle last year, without the bolt peep, for $3,500, but it had a bit of a premium for a three digit serial.
I have sold four of my 71s in the past few years and the worst I did was $1,700 for a ~75% deluxe long tang bolt peep about 6 months ago.

Re: Winchester mod. 71
A local gunshop here took one in on consignment. He put it on gunbroker and sold it for $1200.00. It was a nice gun, not a high grade takedown, but a very well kept rifle with a reciever peep on it. In the store he asked $1100.00 but I did not have the money at the time or I would have scooped it up. That was about 4 months ago, (Before the BARACKYLPSE).
In August I went ot a gun show in southern Oregon and a guy had a real beauty for $1150.00 with dies and ammo.
Now I'm not saying that a collector may not pay high dollars for rare pieces, but for general use they are out there. Maybe you have to search awhile but they are there, or at least out here. I have one on my wish list, but others keep getting in the way, and my funds are short.
Just my $.02, others may have different opinions, and I respect that.

Re: Winchester mod. 71
Rafter 7 I don't know if your interested or not but they have nine model 71's for sale at Cabela's, from $1900 TO $6000, some are early production long tang, a 1936 and a couple of 1937 productions through to mid fifties models, also lots of 86's for sale in 33wcf and 45-70, I think the half mag 86 light weight 86 looks better then the 71's, the 71's always look a bit heavy and chunky to me, and I know my original 86 full mag 33wcf handles better then my Browning 71, I think I would rather have $4000 worth of 86 then the same in a 71 unless you want the extra bit of grunt in the 348wcf.
Another thing you see so many people writing that the 71 action is stronger then the 86 action I don't know where they get this from as when WINCHESTER first offered the 71 the advertisement read model 71 with the new 86 Golden jubilee action, also from what I have read most of the old timer's that turned deer rifles into elephant rifles used 86's and not 71's and that an 86 will handle the higher pressure better because of the cut of the locking bolts. Anyway buddie hope you find what you are looking for always good to see someone get a 86/71............... "King of Rifles"

Re: Winchester mod. 71
I know for a fact a good long tang deluxe would cost you 2000 10 years ago so when this one came along at 4000 I just cringed and said to myself "They cant be that much" so I posted the question here as to $$$$ I had 3000 in my head and my guesser usually aint that far off at least not 25% worth of off! But I have not had my finger on the pulse of 71s for a long time
I have a very nice 86 in a 33wcf special order but the 33 does not have the punch that the 348 does

Re: Winchester mod. 71
Without seeing at least photos of the rifle and knowing how low the serial # is that Winchester Deluxe long tang Model 71 is worth between $2750 and $3500 depending on the usual factors of any rifle transaction. Of course, the 95/96% rating is the biggest variable. I've seen "95%" rifles that I wouldn't rate at even 90%, and other "95%" rifles that were closer to "as new." I assume you're conservative and an astute judge of character, Rafter, so I'd say the FMV of that 71 Deluxe is around $3000 all day long; $2750 +/- if you're lucky and comfortably up to $3500 if it's really nice or you really want it. $4000 is too high. It all comes down to what "95/96%" is...you know, "what is is" as Bill Clinton is famous for asking when asked about the infamous talents of the lovely Monica! For average Model 71s, I think the market is a little softer now than it was even a few months ago. More seem to be available to choose from, too. An honest 98+% to NIB original Model 71 still will command the progressively higher high end price. Those buyers for the most part are true collectors, know those Model 71s are few and far between, and still have money to spend on very high condition pieces.rafter-7 wrote:A fello offered me a mod. 71 deluxe, long tang ,bolt peep, sling swivels still att. gun and wood @95 maybe 96%
I have not seen an earily deluxe 71 sell at a gun show for about 8 years. The guy is asking around 4000.00 for it I might be able to trim off a little but not much
what would be a fair price for a gun like this one in your area??
thank you
rafter-7
From what I've seen online, prices are coming down on some models of lever action rifles, while others seem to be holding strong or even going up a little. Again, condition and availability are the biggest factors, but sometimes niche factors in, too. You might save a couple hundred bucks by being patient. Then again, you might not come across another strong 95/96% Deluxe long tang Model 71 for a year! Keep in mind the original set of Deluxe swivels is worth $100 plus. It always seems to be "plus" when you need to replace them, too!
Good luck...and please post photos for us to envy when you buy it! Gotta love that Winchester Model 71 porn!!!

With the economy, tanking like it is, one may indeed find some of these old leveractions, with more reasonable pricing in the future. But then again, there are always people with money, even in bad times.
One thing to keep in mind, though, is they are not making anymore classic Winchesters, and the new ones are just not the same.
