help identify a scope

Post by gordylew »

I have what I thought was an old steel tube Weaver or Lyman Alaskan 2.5 with post reticle. The odd thing is there is no name on the scope but even more strange is the adjustment caps are threaded opposite of a normal cap ie. threads on the outside of the cap as apposed to the normal inside the cap. I would like to post a pic but I have not figured out how to post pics on this site. does anyone have a clue going on the description?
Thanks

It's European, probably German.
I have a variable very much like it except it is well marked.

The turrets are in a saddle mount screwed to the tube and the caps are similarly threaded.
It's a shame that you can find absolutely NO markings at all.

I don't believe that's German. It looks very much like the old 700 series Sears centerfire scope. They were made around 1965.

MarlinMan;
Looks like you called it.
I just checked my 1965 G.D. and found confirmation of your statement. It seems that that method of turret attachment was quite common a.t.t.
Good call

Sounds plausible. But who made Sears scopes? we know Winchester ,Mossberg , Marlin made guns for Sears.

Unfortunately I can't find any more info in my records, so not sure if Sears bought these from another supplier, or bought an optical company to make them. They were made from 1965-74. I can't find any info for Sauer scopes at all. I do have info on Sauer mounts, but didn't see any reference for scopes.
It could also be the earlier JC Higgins scope, as they looked very much like the later Sears, but every JC Higgins I've seen was marked "JC Higgins", while the Sears were almost never marked. JC Higgins marked scopes were made from 1957-64.-Vall

The scope came on the gun. I have a soft spot for post reticles. plus it looked period for the gun and that was also pretty cool. it still works great despite the recoil of the .348. If it does ever go kaput I'll replace it with a Leupold 2.5 .
