OT- shipping ammunition ?

Post by dr walker »

Hi, sorry for the off topic post.
I have not shipped ammunition in a few years and dont remember the rules.
Can I ship loaded ammunition through USPS?
or do I have to ship with UPS?
Do I have to tell anyone that it is loaded ammunition?
I have looked at USPS website and could find no info. I called 1800askusps and was told can not ship loaded ammo or firearms of any kind, but I dont think that is correct, so I am unsure.
i hope someone can help.
Thanks, Don

I do not think U.S. Postal Service will allow you to ship any ammo. You will have to use UPS and they may charge you a haz mat fee on top of the normal shipping fee. I know they charge a $ 20.00 haz mat fee for primer and powder shipments.

Go to the UPS site (the most practical way to ship, ammo may NOT go through the USPS) and read their regs. I think it only has to have the ORM sticker which they have to add to the box. It does cost a bit because ammo is heavy. No HAZMAT on LOADED ammo, only on primers and powder which have to be shipped separately.
Sincerely,

Hobie

thanks Hobie, you are right
I just got off the phone with UPS, hazardous material help desk, I can ship through them. I do have to label package ORM-D cartridge small arms. It also must ship UPS Ground.

Hobie,

Are you saying that loaded ammo can not be shipped with powder and primers or that powder and primers can not be shipped togather?
