I live in Wyoming. ALL of my shots are well within 200 yards. I hunt deer, elk & antelope, plus the occasional coyote.

I hunt with a '92 .44 Mag.; a '73 .45 Colt & an '86 in .45-70.

I try to get as close as I can. Then I get closer...

PS: I DO have a .223 for 'yotes & prairie dogs

Well here is another one that grew up in Wyoming and the 30/30 and its cuz the 32 Special I use have taken taken 40+ years of antelope, deer and elk. Yes I own bolt guns with scopes, but I've never thought being able to shoot at long range was the name of the game. Taking game cleanly is what it is all about and the 30/30 will do the job. Personally I think stalking close to my target is the real thrill, so for me a levergun and the last few years, a heavy handgun have been the tools of choice. Try it, you might like it.

Shucks Buck, how come you aren't using a .219 built around a Marlin 336 so you can scope it!

Good topic. I just finished a Gunbroker 30-30 odessy acquiring 4 Winchester 94's and 1 Marlin straight stock rifles. I didn't pay 1 cent more than $300.00 for any of them. Why? I dunno, got an itch I suppose. They all have finish issues, I'm sending one to Mac at the Shootin Iron store for some gunkote refinish.

50yd target.
Sweet! What's the load if I may ask? I just put up 40 rounds with 29 and 30 grains (20 each) of W748 to give a whirl.

O.S.O.K., Sorry, I just saw your post. The load was/is 18.0 gr IMR 4198
for 1595 fps. A very accurate and soft load for target shooting in all .30-30`s that I have tried it in.
I have pushed them much harder with IIRC 23 gr. of the same powder but groups open more as they get hotter. The worst were about 1 1/2" @ 50yd.when the velocity get up close to 2000fps. They also start to string vertically also in my rifles. YMMV
Have fun! :D

Thanks for the welcome. I was a member when I lived in CA. but when I moved up here I got lost. I'm from central Montana, Havre to be exact, and now we have a home and land in Eureka, way up in the NW corner of the state. I'll come clean, I am a Border Patrol Agent with 16 years in. Try not to hold that against me.

I ain't read this thread, and have been thinking on the answer I'd give to just the question in the title for several days... so:

CAUSE IT'S JUST PLAIN UN-AMERICAN NOT TO OWN ONE!

All the stuff about ballistics, nostalgia, "THE deer cartridge", the great arms it's chambered in is just so much rhetoric.

NOW... I'll go back and read what everyone else has said!

Excellent! It looks just like mine, even with the camo nylon sling; except mine has the Centennial bronze decal in the stock. You'll love it. Congratulations!
