The Rifleman Series

Post by RIHMFIRE »

I just spent the evening watching the very first episodes of the Rifleman...
Its really a great family show...Every episode teaches little Mark a lesson...
Something thats missing in todays tv shows
The first episode "Sharpshooter" is about Lucas and Mark just arriving in North Fork..
to buy a ranch and Lucas enters a turkey shoot and is about to win....
but Mark is threaten if he does...
Because of all the side betting....
Well...you know what happens after that....
First episode had a few good stars...
Whos the guy who starred in Easy Rider...not Fonda the other guy....Dennis Hopper
and whos the guy who starred in the High Chapparal? the owner of the ranch!.
Image
8 episodes down....160 to go....
heres a great site http://www.riflemanconnors.com/

I just received a boxed set of The Rifleman series for Christmas and watched this episode the other day.
Unlike some old TV shows,The Rifleman has really stood the test of time well.
Mind you, I still don't know how many shots he fires in the opening credits :!:

The actor who played the owner on The High Chaparral was Leif Erickson. Cameron Mitchel played his brother Buck.

That is correct, I remember both the Rifleman and High Chaparral. Too bad they don't make them like that anymore.

Gentlemen,

The entire series is good, but that first handful of episodes is a "darker" patch of stories, especially the Sam Peckinpah- written/ directed episodes. They are fairly serious, without being gloomy. ...and they are still viewable by the whole family.

While I find it a pleasure to watch "Bonanza", and other, one-hour Western shows, "The Rifleman" proves that you can tell a good, full, meaningful story in just 30 minutes. Acting, directing, and editing all go hand-in-hand, but a good story helps to make the series a pleasure to watch. ...not to mention a more clearcut division between right & wrong, and high standards of morals & decency that contribute to this impression.

In the soundtrack he caps off twelve rounds! However, in reality, the last two were "dubbed in" to fill the time/action sequence for continuity's sake..... so the scene "sounded right" with the action, and so the show's intro timed out perfectly.

Hobie, AmBraCol, Thanks for cleaning out the last couple
of responces!

Funny one of you guys mentioned Bonanza...
turns out Michael Landon , Little Joe,
was in a few of the 1st years episodes...

I was thinking of getting a 92 SRC and converting it
to match the rifle used in the show.....
So far I have only found 1 guy who sells the lever...

I want to say it was April or may 08 issue, showed it on the front cover.Had a hole rite up on it and said Chuck could relay fire it like the show beginning.

plinkin pete,

Speaking of "good guns", this episode comes to mind:

"TV Review: Gun Control on The Rifleman, "The Anvil Chorus" Episode 154, 1962"

You know, I always wondered whether one could actually hit anything shooting like that? What with the butt stock against the thigh it seems the gun would wobble around quite a bit with every step.

Today...."Two and a Half Men" Synopsis...young boy lives with male slut-drunk, yet wealthy, Uncle and divorced-dysfunctional Dad. Whorish narcissitic Grandmother pops in the plot for comic relief. Set dressing includes a parade of well developed young women, demontsrating self- esteem issues and mild nyphomia.
Young boy seems to have a talent for producing gas and dodging education.

I like the Rifleman better... and find myself watching Andy Griffith a lot these day.

Leif Erickson is the fellow you are thinking of...

If you can ever run across it GUNS Magazine in the 60's had an article by Rod Redwing called Teaching the Rifleman to shoot . It went through all the guns and the mods that alllowed them to function. Without a special plunger in the top of the breech face you willl drop out the live round when spin cocking. The opening sequence was filmed with Chuck firinng the gun without a pin inn the leveer, he learned to do that by hand and they only put in the pin when he pinched his finger and they decided that they didn't want THAT to happen.

As to firinng from the hip, at 15 yards you can get good enough to bounce tin cans and run through 6x6 steel disks pretty fast. Beyond 25 yards your not going to score very well on a man sized sillouette. Rod Redwing had Chuck practice with live ammo on tin cans till he got pretty good, that's why it looks so real.

Gday All,
Going slightly off the subject, I loved all those old western shows. A favourite was ''Tales of Wells Fargo" written by Nat Holt. Cannot remember the name of the hero, his name in the show was Jim Hardy special agent for Wells Fargo, wore a saa on his left hip, would love to find DVD's of this show, its what got me into the cowboy guns as a kid in the 50's. Have still got the bug big time. Perhaps they should bring the show back using a top break S&W 5.5 inch 45 Schofield. Would love one of those. (original only need apply)

The actor in "Tales of Wells Fargo " was Dale Robertson. He was left handed. I also liked that series a lot.
