OT - Favorite target for irons

Post by cnjarvis »

I haven't found a paper target for shooting iron sights that I really like so I thought I'd ask you guys what you liked to use.

Do you find that color vs. B&W targets makes a difference?

8" round shoot N see targets work the best for me, I can 'sit" the target on top of the front site.

I use a sour dough type front sight and prefer a square target that matches the width of my front sight at what ever range I am shooting at. Usually a 4" square at 100 yards. Easy to make with a piece of cardboard and spray paint. Just my .02

My favorite is a 2 inch black square inside of a 5 inch square. http://www.targetz.com/targetzlib/10116.pdf
I download targets from http://www.targetz.com/targets08.htm
They have many to choose from.

I print out sheets of paper with rows of 2 inch black dots. I get about 25 or 30 dots to a page.
Then I use a big paper cutter at work to cut 2 inch squares that contain one 2 inch black dot.
I carry a bunch of these with me when I go shooting at the range or in my back field.
They give me a big target when I check in at the range, like 2 ft by 3 ft with a 6 inch black bull. One to a customer.
Some guys just blast away at the big bull. Some never use the big target and post their expensive shoot-n-see targets.
I take my bunch of dots and a glue stick and paste on the dots, usually 3 or 4 rows of 4 across.
Then I work my way accross and down during the shooting session.
I can see the black circles very well. I can't see colors to save my life, so the red stickies are useless for me.
I am usually shooting with a peep. I put the top of the front post on the bottom of the 2 inch circle (6 o'clock hold) and
get very repeatable sighting.
When using a scope, I sight on the center of the circle.

Not very high tech, but it works for me.

Thanks Guys. I appreciate the info. Targetz.com has a ton of them and I found several that I'd like to try.

Now here's one of my favorite scope targets:

I used to use matchboxes but now I have to use the cartons that TVs come in!

Seriously, I prefer a small black dot on a plain white background, I make the dot bigger depending on the range and a six o clock hold.

I use a 3" Shoot N See dot on either a white or cardboard background set up at either 50-yards or 100-yards. When using iron sights, I use the six-o'clock hold (dot on top of frount sight blade) and when using a scope I hold the cross hairs dead on the middle of the dot.

I use an inverted "T" , 2" wide for 50 yards. The 3 "ears" are about 4" long. My black patch tape on cheap posterboard from the dollar store. I hold just at the bottom of the bar centered on the verticle bar.

Here is what I like for M16 and other peep sighted guns.

Really designed for 200 and 300 yard shooting. The black is a man sized target looking at someone in the prone position.

OK, I'm cheap. I go to a craft store where they sell black kraft paper on 3' wide rolls, by the foot. Buy about 10' or so, lasts forever. I cut squares out of various sizes, try to find a size about the width of the front sight for the range I'm at. Paste them on graph paper with a paste stick. Way cheaper than toner cartridges, and much blacker too.

Hi guys,
my favorite target for scoped rifles is a "post it" note manufactured by 3M. They come in all sizes and colours.
I find the fluro pink 2" squares best for my rifle range's light conditions. I find them in the stationary supplies in the supermarket.

I take an A4 size sheet of white paper and using a gluestick, just run it over the back of the "post it" square. I apply the note as a diamond to the middle of the white paper and tape it to a cardboard backer on my target frame.
I find I can align the scope reticle much more accurately on the diamond rather than a circle or square.
It is very cheap and simple to do.

For most of my iron sight target shooting, I just print off a stack of targets from "surplusrifleforum.com".

Kirby.

Dern my hide! My first thought was "my head"... it's where my wife aims when she throws the iron at me! Hey and with little to no provocation either!
