OT / Although I wish it wasn't....

Post by DennisB »

Wouldn’t it be nice if Leverguns had a lounge area for OT posts?
I’m not complaining and I do appreciate and thank the owners of Leverguns for providing this fine sight but I come here to read about, talk about and learn about lever guns. I find that I’m coming here less often and I think it’s because of having to weed through all the OT posts, many that aren’t marked as such. This morning by actual count on page one, of the 40 posts (not counting sticky posts) well over 50% were off topic, many not even having anything to do with guns or shooting.

I don’t have any idea what it would take to do this or if it’s even possible, it may not be....

If nothing changes I won't leave or throw a fit. I often voice my opinion among my friends....that’s all I’m doing here (I hope).

Well, Dennis, this has been addressed ad naseum using your reasoning (which is NOT in question) but the owners have decided that this will do. A former iteration of this forum had a "campfire" for such things. They did away with it when they switched to our recently defunct format. But I hear you.

Right now it is me going through every post to mark as OT or POLITICS or move to the Classifieds when forum members haven't done so. There's been many such posts, mostly by new members. I take it they haven't read the stickies.

You can also do as I do and bookmark the "View posts since last visit" link in the right side of the "Paco Kelly's Leverguns.com Forum Index" page. That will cut out a lot of the chaff.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Hey Dennis,

This was covered recently on one of those OT posts... ;)

Paco set it up as a community type forum - like it says on the forum index,
"Welcome to the Leverguns.Com Forum. This is a high-class place so act respectable. We discuss most anything here ... politely."
We went a bit past that by separating out the FS, FT, WTB etc into their own sub-forum. The problem with specialization is, where do you stop? I've seen the other forums with forty eleven different sub topic forums - and they don't have the sense of community that this one does.

Also, specialized forums either die - or diversify. Take a look at the Savage 24 forum, for example. If all they talked about there was Savage 24's - they'd have little to say after a while and it'd shrivel up and die.

So that's why it is what it is. Ain't it great? :D 8)

...Here's another angle. Some, like me, prefer that everything stay together. If a change were made, then there would still be people not satisfied. There's no way everybody can be satisfied!

Personally, I think there are a bit too many OT posts. One thing we can all do is to think before making OT posts. I will confess that I do make occasional OT posts, but I think before making them and try to decide if it will have sufficient appeal to warrant posting them. If I think enough people will be interested in something OT that I'm thinking of posting, and it's not too far off what leverguns is about, then chances are I will post it. But I do try to keep my OT posts to a minimum. i.e., I try to have a lot more on-topic levergun posts than OT posts. If we all did that, then the majority of posts would be on topic with maybe only 20- 25% off topic.

I understand about the OT's, although they are the ones I respond to the most

This is by far my favorite site because of the simplicity. Everything is in one place.

Also we don't have Socialist moderators like some sites do

I think of it as a campfire and alot of things get jabbed about by friends.

I can also say that whenever someone posts a question pertaining to leverguns, this bunch of wacko's are on it like a murder of crows and it gets answered

I have seen some obscure questions that had drifted off the front page, but if it ever happens and you feel it didn't spend enough time on the front page then, BUMP THAT SUCKER :D :D

Always remember, if something seems perfect, QUESTION IT.

I am with Kirk D...do we really need all of these OT posts? If we all think a bit before posting, like "do the guys really want to hear or comment about what I am about to post"...maybe we won't post so much chaff (as Hobie puts it). Little less "running off at the keyboard"?

Like it has been stated, this has been talked about, a lot , and it is the way it is. Would say more but the dirt is already worn out.
